…or you can use the mv file move command at the command line. But you’re probably not a command-line user. (Not yet. You’ll get there, as you need or want to use more of the available capabilities.)
Finder general info: Use macOS keyboard shortcuts - Apple Support (this shows the menus, and opening the menus will show the available shortcuts to the right of the entries, and will reflect the modifier keys (command, option, control, etc) when those are held while the menu is open.)

Whether one or a selected group of files, you press and hold the cmd (⌘) key while dragging the file(s) to the external drive and release that key when you have dropped the file(s).
