Why would a friend completely disappear from my Find My App?

The most likely answer to this would be that the friend is no longer sharing their location with you.

You can request that they share their location by following these steps that were found at: Find friends and share your location with Find My - Apple Support:

To start following another person, you need to first share your location with them. Then follow these steps:

1. Open the Find My app and select the People tab.

2. Select the person you shared your location with.

3. Scroll down and choose Ask To Follow Location, then select OK.

That’s not something we can speculate on. We can offer some troubleshooting. Even if your friend shows that they are still sharing their location with you, they can stop sharing and set it up again, just to be sure. 

Another thing you can do is quit and relaunch the app. Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch

You can also restart your device. Restart your iPhone
