Home indicator missing

iPadOS 15.6.1 running on iPad Air 3 with 256 Gb of storage

The Home indicator (solid horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen) is missing. I never even knew it existed until I watched the recommended appleinsider.com video on 50 Multitasking Tips.

How can I correct this?

The Home indicator is apparently very useful for app switching.

if you mean the line at the bottom of the screen then I believe it's only available on devices with faceID
