I spilled some coffee near the port on my iPad 5 so now I have to play with the charging cord to get it to connect and charge. Do I need to take it to the Apple Genius Store?

Water (including coffee) and electronics do not make happy bedfellows - as iPad has absolutely no resistance to water damage. If you iPad has gotten wet - and is now misbehaving - damage should be suspected.
You would be well advised to make an appointment with with the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where your iPad can be tested and assessed. If service is required, you’ll be in the beet possible place to explore your available options.
