Cannot get the Numbers User Guide to open in Apple Books. Seems to be a problem most people are having. Is there a solution.

I always forget that link. You can get the same thing by choosing Help > Numbers Help from the menu from within the app.
If you want to read the guide in the Books app simply open the Books app and search for Numbers User Guide. Then click the cloud and arrow download prompt.
Also be sure to check at the templates at File > New in your menu. They provide excellent working examples of how to set things up in Numbers.
