Why did spell check for pages forget common spellings

After a recent iOS update to 15.6.1 the spellcheck feature in Pages seems to have forgotten the spelling of almost every word in the English language.

I’m using Pages version 12.1 (7359.0.88) for iOS on an iPad Pro 11 inch 2nd gen, model MXDD2LL/A

As an example I copied and pasted text from an e-mail into pages. I included a screenshot of what happens.

Why did the spell check lose it’s dictionary?
