iMovie Help

I have just received a .mov and a .mp4 file that was transferred from a 8mm movie. The movie was taken when I was in 9th grade and includes many of my class mates. I want add some titles and music, since this movie has no sound. I have a class reunion coming up and the movie is a hoot to watch but I can't figure how how to expand it in the display at the bottom of my screen to add titles and music. The viewer shows all of the footage. See image attached.

I have Monterey 12.5.1 and iMovie is 10.3.4. I appreciate any help or ideas about how to breakdown this movie down and add the titles and music.

THANKS!

The slider that I mentioned, locted above and to the right of the timeline, does not vary the duration of the clip, but only expands out the display of the clip on the timeline to make it easier to edit. Are you referring to dragging the edge of the clip?

You cannot increase the duration of a video clip by dragging its edge. The duration of the movie is what it is. You can increase its playing time by slowing down its speed, but then you get a slow motion effect. You can, however, reduce the duration of a video clip by dragging its edge to trim out some of the footage. But that would result in some footage being removed from the clip. You can also speed up the clip to decrease its playing time.

I don't know why you would be needing to use the < key or the > key. Those are keys on your keyboard and would not need to be "displayed" in any event.

You've made a good start by creating a project and importing your clip into the timeline. It appears that you want to split the clip into segments to edit them. You can do that by placing the playhead at the in-point where you want to make a split, and do Modify/Split clip. Then move the playhead to the out-point and do another Modify/Split Clip. That will create a segment between the two split points that you can delete, or move to a different place on the timeline, or apply edits.

Refer to the help menu link that I posted earlier. It has a good search feature where you can search by search word or by subject matter in the sidebar. That's a good way to learn the basic features of iMovie.

Thanks for your response - I've reread what you sent to me.

I can reduce the time of the Frame by using the slider but it won't increase. With great effort, I am able to display the arrows < and > but I can get it to display more of the footage.

Could it be because the video is 21 minutes long and that's beyond iMovie's capability?

Thank you Rich for your insight. This morning I decided to create a "New Project" with my movie. Lo and behold, it opened up like I had wanted it to. Now I can get to work on this identifying the students and adding some music and titles. Thanks for your help!

PS. I love Apple/Mac products and how easy it is do be creative!

I forgot to mention that technically there is no size or duration limit to an iMovie project. People have posted on here who have projects with durations of 25 hours and even, in one case, 77 hours. So a 21 minute clip is well within iMovie's capacity. Of course, with truly massive projects like above mentioned, there may be some function or rendering problems due to the pure volume of data being managed.
