Try Software Update while in Safe Mode.
FWIW, Big Sur is the latest version of macOS a Mid 2014 MBP can run. There was a Safari 15.6.1 update released recently. What update notice are you getting?
When I press “check for updates” it says checking for updates and the rotating cog on the left of the message ( sorry don’t know correct name for it) just keeps going round for as long as I show the page.
After updating all my other Apple items after recent security warnings, I switched on laptop and pressed the Apple logo, then About this Mac then the software button. Normally it would tell me if it was already up to date or if an update was available however problem mentioned occurred each time I’ve tried this.
Belated thank you for your advice. We had unexpected visitors and I left my laptop in sleep mode. When I opened it 2 days later (I had just been using my IPad) I discovered that it had updated. Still don’t understand why it took so long but at least it’s resolved.
Thanks once again for your time!
Sorry, what I meant was, where or what are you "Being told to update "?
You're welcome.
