iMessage spinning wheel

I recently switched from Android via Samsung Galaxy Note 9 to an iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Old text messages do not show, for a particular contact, even though I used the move to iOS app.

In iMessage, this particular important contact's text message only has the grey spinning wheel at the top under their name.

Resetting the phone, several times, has done nothing.

Sending messages, you see a single text message, but closing and reopening iMessage, makes it appear as if its the first time I'm ever using the app with old messages not being seen.

What are the next steps to resolve this?

Had the exact same problem switching from Android to Iphone 14.

Solution is going to settings, clicking on your name on top of the screen, click iCloud, show all, then making sure "messages" is switched from off to on. Allow the messages to backup to Icloud (wifi+plugged in). This solved it for me.

Good luck!

Majsmom, I’m by-no-means an expert on the matter—my mother just switched from Android on an outdated 4G plan to an iPhone 14 on a 5G plan and went through this. The issue for her revolved around one conversation in particular where a lot of pictures/videos/etc were shared, matching the pattern of many others here. Perhaps this might help:

Setting iCloud to “On” and then going to “iCloud Backup>>Back Up Now” would look like it was working, but was showing a message saying there isn’t enough space. I got the same message when I went through the iCloud settings and turned off everything except Shared Albums (under Photos), and Messages.

This didn’t seem to fix the problem for me. So I stopped a few things from using my internet so the phone would have as much Download speed as possible; I then brought up the conversation and left the wheel to spin away. Lo and behold, the text messages and barrage of pictures finally arrived.

However, after the text messages appeared, I noticed the storage used for Messages (in iCloud>>Manage Storage) had gone up. So, it may have been one, or it may have been both.

So, I recommend making sure you’re on a Wifi with a decent speed, without anyone streaming or downloading while trying to retrieve the messages. I also recommend having one of the conversations up, or at least the Messages app—this might be unnecessary, but I can see it losing priority if it’s not the focused app, or perhaps deleting the cache of the download. It could take hours if it’s a slow speed. If still nothing, perhaps try the original iCloud solution, but make sure only Shared Albums (under Photos) and Messages are switched on under iCloud settings, then repeat waiting for them to download. (Just FYI, it warns you about Safari settings and Notes, but her phone was fairly new, so those weren’t issues)

If still nothing, I’m making a guess that perhaps your conversations are actually exceeding iCloud’s minuscule 5GB for its free plan. There’s an upgraded plan, where it’s 50GB for $1 a month—and then there’s others that go even higher, up to $10, if you think that’s still not enough. It’s not much of a risk if it doesn’t work, but seems very-much worth it if it does work. It’s billed monthly, so just make sure to cancel before the next cycle. This is only a last resort, of course—I understand how stupid it sounds to throw money at something, blindly hoping it works, when it currently feels like it’s just giving you a spinning middle-finger.

I agree that this sucks, and you shouldn’t try to jump through this many hoops to have a functioning phone. By all means, you have the right to be angry, and I’d be frustrated too if this was happening to me—that’s why I shut down all my electronics just hoping for the conversation to load for my mom. The worst part is that is has no indication that anything is loading, or failing to load. The problem I think comes down to Androids not wanting to make it easy for people to switch to iPhone, and vice-versa. They want to make it frustrating to the point that you switch back.

Anyways, sorry for the long post. I just saw your message and hoped my experience might help get your conversations back in one piece. I see you posted this about a month ago, so perhaps it’s already been resolved. Either way, I really hope you get an early Christmas miracle, and you notice that all your old conversations and pictures are back very soon! Good luck!!

Ok I had the same problem with all the old text messages from my husband. I switched from galaxy note 9 to iPhone 14 pro max BUT I believe that I have figured out a fix. What I did was pull down the screen a few times where it’s just spinning around (as if to reload) and all of the sudden all of my husbands old texts messages were there!!!!! Please try it.

If I delete the thread, and start completely new it seems to fix the issue. It happened with both iphone iMessages and Android SMS. It was just on a few, not every conversation.

As far as lost images that is more a Android to iOS thing, leveraging two different systems. There are 3rd party apps on Android to pack up all sms and MMS messages. Prior to sending the conversation you can click search and then see all the images in that conversation and save the ones you want to keep.

Has anyone found a solution yet that works? I’ve been in contact with Apple and their fixes haven’t worked. This is happening on my texting with my daughter, mom and husband. My most important contacts. On my other contacts, when I switched from Android to Apple, only parts of the texting chains moved over and only my responses. So, I’ve lost years and years of pictures, memories, etc. so not happy about this switch!

I'm glad that "Solution is going to settings, clicking on your name on top of the screen, click iCloud, show all, then making sure "messages" is switched from off to on. Allow the messages to backup to Icloud (wifi+plugged in). This solved it for me" fixed your problem.

I've spent about 3 hours on the phone over the past 5 weeks with Apple support and countless hours trying to do their "fixes." My ICloud setting is already set to on and the issue hasn't fixed for me. The last time I spoke with Apple, they told me that I needed to download "another" Android to Apple App to transfer over my messages correctly. They would not tell me what App to download and use, since there are not any more that are Apple approved/supported outside of the IOS App that is used the first time you make the transfer. I have researched multiple different apps and have tried the one that seemed the most reliable "sendanywhere" App, only to find that it pulls an error code that it is not supported by my Android. I had a Google 2xl. So, I am still stuck with no resolve. I am not willing to delete text threads as the threads not working are with my daughter, mom and husband. I have years and years worth of threads, pictures, memories that I am not willing to just delete.

I just switched from Galaxy S22 to IPhone 14 and this is also happening to me. I’ve noticed it’s only happening in my longest message threads that would have transferred over. the messages are visible for a couple seconds and then disappear only leaving the spinning wheel at the top. Does deleting the thread with these contacts and then starting a new one solve this issue?
