Hi Pat Schaefer,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand that your iPhone loses a connection before you can complete a backup. Is that correct? If so, we recommend trying the steps in the resource below.

If you can't back up your iOS or iPadOS device to a computer or restore it from a backup

To perform the troubleshooting actions recommended by the article above, please read through and complete the steps in the section titled "If an alert says that your backup is corrupt or incompatible."

We’re recommending the steps above because they directly address the issue you initially reached out to the community about, which is that your iPhone loses a connection before you can complete a backup.

If the original problem persists after trying our suggested troubleshooting steps, provide us with specifics on what you see for more help, and we will continue from there.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

Apple has done this in 2019, 2021

everytime they update IOS or Mac OS they forget / put off fixing older versions of iTunes.

Of course they no longer really support older versions of iTunes

so they have put together a patch to allow IOS devices to be backed up to older versions of Mac OS.

They pretty much break it with every new version of IOS

the same has happened now, this time it seems to involve USB.

It actually breaks other old Apple tools too besides the iTunes backup.
