iPhone 4 Photo's & Video Rotating Sideways In Email

When I take photo's & video's holding my iPhone 4 straight up and down (portrait mode), the iPhone 4 rotates photo's and video's sideways when emailed from iPhone to another person's email address. Has anyone else had this problem? The photo's & video's look perfect when viewing on the iPhone but turn out sideways when emailed.

I called Apple support about this and they said it was likely a software problem, but said not enough compliants have come in to push a priority fix for it. They said a future iOS update may fix the problem.

I spent $299 for my phone and I want this fixed. What recourse do I have? I've had the phone for about 6 weeks. Any advice?

iPhone 4, iOS 4, updated to iOS 4.0.1

Yes, well, this has been noted several times in this thread already.

THE EASIER WAY to remember it is to put the video/camera control buttons (ie: the one's that are also the volume up and down buttons) at the bottom every time you take a photo or video. That works every time and what I've been doing for almost a year now. HOWEVER, this still doesn't solve the problem if you WANT to take a video or photo in Portrait mode. To solve those two situations I still recommend using Fremake Video to solve the video problem:

And JPegg Lossless Rotator to solve the photo problem:

Yep sadly Im having same problem with my Iphone 5.

I will record a video in portrait mode, i then sync my iphone up on2 my pc windows 7, i open my iphone storage n can see the videos n photos i have saved in my camera roll. I drag my video into the correct video folder on my pc, i then add my file (new recorded video) in my itunes library n then click sync. Wen sync has finished i unplug my iphone and then open my videos file tab on my iphone n find my new video, i click play but my video is stuck sideways (landscape) even tho it was recorded in portrait mode. So i have heads missing n it will not rotate. I have contacted Apple on phone and went into the Apple shop 2day and they have no idea why its doing this and the guy at the genius bar said i cant help u sorry and he even asked other people for help.

Can anyone help with y my videos r stuck on portrait once i have moved them n synced them? If i dont move them out of camera roll they will rotate but once i move them n sync dats wen the prob happens.

I always did this with my iphone 3gs so not sure y now all the videos i sync which i recorded with my 3gs or my new iphone 5 r stuck on landscape mode even tho they r recorded in portrait. I used 2 b able 2 turn my mob around n da video would rotate either landscape or portrait.

Plz any help coz its very dissapointing and frustrating especially for me to have to drive one hour 2 my closest Apple store n they couldnt even help me.

I have had so many dramas with this Iphone 5....not happy

For videos, try this:

  1. Transfer your iPhone video to a Windows 7 PC.
  2. Open Windows Movie Maker (free with the operating system)
  3. Click “Add Video and Photos” button at the top. Select your iPhone video and add it to Movie Maker.
  4. Then use one of the “Rotate” buttons at the top. Your movie will be rotated and plays.

For photos, try this:

  1. Transfer your photos to a Windows 7 PC.
  2. Open Windows Explorer.
  3. Navigate to the picture you want to rotate.
  4. Right-click the photo. A menu appears.
  5. Select either rotate clock-wise or counterclockwise. Your photo stays that way.

This won't work for photos of peoples faces. It will rotate a picture of a tree, or a car, or a even a crowd of people in the distance. It does not work when there is an upclose facial. I have had conversations with an apple tech who won't confirm, but beat around the bush, that with iO6, apple included facial recognition software. For some upcoming feature like opening the lock screen maybe? The facial recognition software is interfering with the camera/pictures app. The rotated picture wont' happen if you hold the phone/camera in landscape mode with the home buttong to the right. Or as Steve would say, "you're holding it wrong". Landscape mode is more like using an actual camera anyway so Steve isn't "wrong". It would just make more sense for the camera app to be able to hold the picture in the correct orientation. This is a problem when using the front facing camera however, you have to remember to have the home button to the left or it will be upside down.

It's a simple case of iOS and windows not playing nice in the sandbox.

Not sure if this addresses the original question completely accurately, but here is what I've found:

I tried turning OFF "screen orientation lock", then taking the photos in Landscape mode (with volume buttons both above and below during photo). When I connected the phone and viewed the photos in Windows Photo Viewer, they all appeared in the upright position, not needing to be rotated at all.

Just remember to keep ON auto rotate while you take the photos or video. (Ie: The little lock icon should NOT be visible within the circle arrow when you double-press the home button and swipe to the right)

Hope this helps.

In case it's not already in this thread, there are two solutions:

1. Play back on your Windows PC using Apple Quicktime. It will play the video correctly regardless of orientation.

2. Or remember when shooting to hold camera sideways (landscape) with the home button to the right. It will show up correctly when played back on the PC in any program.

3. There are also apps that correctly orient iPhone apps on the iphone -- VideoSlimmer, for example ($2.99) - and on the PC, Windows Live Movie Maker can rotate any video in any way, but it's a several-step process.

I think its all about software compatability. Apple software recognizes the orientation when the picture was taken, and uses that when the movie is replayed. Some viewers do not check the orientation and just play the movie. I had this problem and here is how I solved it. View the .mov using quicktime or itunes instead of windows viewer. You can right click the file and "open with" or change the default viewer.

yep...

So in order to display iPhone videos correctly on computers without rotating them, you need to hold your iPhone in landscape when recording videos with it. You still have two options though in landscape mode. You can either hold iPhone horizontally with the home button on the left or right. With the home button on the left, you will get upside down iPhone videos when displaying on Windows PC. The proper way to shoot a video using iPhone is to hold the phone in landscape with the home button on the right hand side.

Thank you! This works, at least for me watching the videos on my computer.

This is still happening on Windows 7 and an iPhone 5 with iOS 8+. My computer was set to play all videos with Windows Media Player. I guess I'll have to change that so Movies now use Quicktime. Don't quite love the solution, but it works. I don't really like that Apple forces us to do things 'the Apple way'.

Only issue I still have is when sending these to other people.

Anyway, thank you!
