External display takes over a minute to connect

I have a Macbook Air 2022 with an M2 chip and I've been trying to connect my external display to it and it takes over a minute to do so. My last MacBook pro-2018 connected almost instantaneously. Was wondering if there was a fix for this. Saw a similar question with a response telling the person to reset the SMC but I tried and it did not work.

MacBook Air, macOS 12.5

Hi Camdenw2599,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

Resetting the SMC on a Mac with Apple silicon only involves a restart but wouldn't be appropriate for this issue.

  • Have you tried a different cable or port yet?
  • Do you use a hub? If so, try a direct connection to isolate the issue further.

You can also test the issue in a new user account to further isolate the issue to system-wide and your user. Here's how: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

"Add a user

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .
  2. If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
  3. Click the Add button  below the list of users.
  4. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
  5. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
  6. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
  7. Click Create User."

If the issue occurs in the new user, try contacting the manufacturer of the monitor. It's possible there is a firmware update available.

If it doesn't happen in the new user, please visit Apple Support.

Have a fantastic day!
