Bluetooth headphones automatically reduce sound to nothing on iPhone 11

I recently purchased an iPhone 11 and then some Bluetooth headphones that plug in to the iPhone. All worked fine the first day I used them, but now when I plug in the headphones the iPhone volume automatically reduces to nothing and it won’t change when I try to increase it (I only get sound for a fraction of a second and then it goes back to nothing). Incidentally the sound adjusts normally and works fine without the headphones plugged in. So ultimately I cannot use the headphones at all. Can anyone help as to how to fix this?

iPhone 11, iOS 15

Hey Annlw73,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you've done a great job of isolating this a bit already. You mentioned plugging them in and also mentioned Bluetooth. Could we get a bit more information about the type of headphones you're using? Are they wireless or physically connected?

Do you have another Bluetooth device such as headphones or a speaker to test? If so, see if the same happens there. That'll let you know whether the issue is with your iPhone or your headphones. Perhaps this is related to headphone safety settings. Try the turning off this feature if enabled from Settings > Sounds & Haptics (Or Sounds) > Headphone Safety. Check out Use headphone audio level features on iPhone - Apple Support for further details. It's important to note, "Headphone Notifications may be turned on by default, and in some countries or regions, you may not be able to turn it off."

Have a great day!
