We see mixed success reports here on Apple's USB SuperDrive, that was last updated in Summer 2012 (😳).
With the proper USB-A to USB-C adaptor—Apple-branded ones seem most successful—and connecting the drive DIRECTLY to the computer (no hubs), people are getting them to work on M1 Macbook Pros.
Across various Mac models, the two most common causes of their not working are:
1) the SuperDrive is upside down, and
2) it is attached through hubs or docks.
That said, some people never get them to work,
Apple has feedback links for different product groups, but there is not one for peripherals. As the problem happens with your MacBook Pro, I recommend using the Macbook Pro feedback link:

There are far better, more modern third-party options. I am considering buying this one for my iMac::

Advantages over the SuperDrive:
- It is USB3, ~10X faster transfers than the USB2 in the geriatric SuperDrive
- Tray-load optical drives are historically more reliable than slot-load models
- It has an independent power supply so is not as likely to suffer the "no hubs or docks" restriction of the SD
- The power cord and separate USB cable can be quickly and cheaply replaced if the cat chews them into oblivion. The SD's USB cord is permanently fixed to the device and the drive will be useless if the cat attacks, and you get the pleasure of buying a new SD with the same vulnerability.
- Almost all read/write speed for the OWC unit are faster than the SD.
- Same price and the SuperDrive
Disadvantage:
- The OWC is larger than the Apple drive. A possible problem if you travel with your opticals drives (I don't).
Offered for your consideration.
