Apple Mail not moving emails to folders at all or incorrectly

I am having email problems with my Apple Mail version 16.0 on my MacBook Pro laptop. For example, when I go to delete an email, sometimes it doesn’t delete. Also, sometimes when I move an email from my inbox to a folder, the transfer doesn’t stick, and the email shows up in my inbox again later in the day.

This only occurs on my laptop. Apple Mail on my phone works fine. If I delete an email on my iPhone, it stays deleted. But sometimes the same email still shows up as unread on Apple Mail on my laptop.

I am running MacOS Monterey 12.5.1. I have closed and restarted my laptop using PRAM. I have deleted my Exchange account on Internet Accounts and rebuilt it. Nothing seems to help.

Hey there, syaleloehr.

Thanks for reaching out on Apple Support Communities regarding your mail not syncing between devices.  We can help.

It sounds like your mail is not syncing when making changes from your MacBook Pro, but are on your iPhone. Let's start by checking that your Mail settings are correct by using: Mail Settings Lookup  To see if the settings match what is on your iPhone, go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Tap email account > Advanced.

You can also test to see if this occurs in safe mode, which helps to rule out a few software causes, including apps that run when you start up your Mac. It sounds like you're using a Mac with an Intel processor, so the steps below will help you boot in to safe mode: Start up your Mac in safe mode

"Start up your Intel-based Mac in safe mode

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key until you see the login window.
  2. Log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again.
  4. On either the first or second login window, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar."

Once you start in safe mode, see if you can replicate the issue. Then click Apple menu () > Restart to get back to normal.

Let us know the results and take care!
