Watch Series 5 Unable to Pair to iPhone 12 Pro Max

Purchased Apple Watch series 5. During initial pairing to my iPhone 12 Pro Max, will start the initial pairing process but fail part way through.

iOS 15.6.1

Watch OS - Unsure (unable to pair and find out)

after the initial pairing messages on both devices, the iPhone is prompted that the watch needs to update to continue pairing. However you proceed from here, the below message/screenshot will eventually occur.

“Update Apple Watch

Your iPhone and Apple Watch are

unable to sync data for apps such as

Mail and Activity. To continue syncing

data with your iPhone, make sure your

Apple Watch is on the latest version of

watchOs.”

this message doesn’t randomly pop up but, which ever set up option you pick eventually is displayed in its attempt to pair.

I have reset both the Watch and phone. I have reset the phone’s network settings. I have turned both devices off and on again. I backed the phone up and reset it. I have done all of these steps in varying orders, but the message continues to display.

I had a series 3 Apple Watch, but I unpaired it prior to any reset.

what other steps should I take, if any?

Greetings JakehaleyWatch,

Are you seeing any update errors if you choose ‘Update’ from this message?

Depending on what you see on the Apple Watch screen, some steps from the following article may help - If you can't pair an Apple Watch with your iPhone

If the pairing process stalls
If it seems like the Apple Watch pairing process has stalled — for example, the pairing animation remains on the screen for several minutes — resetting the watch might help:
1. Press and hold the Digital Crown while your Apple Watch is in pairing mode.
2. Tap Reset when it appears on your watch.
3. After your watch resets, you can pair again.

Thanks.

Hello JakehaleyWatch,

Since this is related to setting up your Apple Watch, let's follow the steps that may resolve the issue here: Set up your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If you can't set up your Apple Watch or you get an error message
Make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of iOS.
Turn off your iPhone and turn it back on.
Turn off your Apple Watch and turn it back on

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply,

The update message does not remain on the screen long enough for me to press an option. It flashes on the screen and then disappears within a second or two. Even if I wait for the message to appear (like I said it appears at regular intervals, so I can anticipate it), and tap my finger where the options will be, my phone appears to not register my touch at that moment, so I cannot pick either option.

I have also looked at that article, but was unable to use any of the solutions effectively. I have to reset the watch to factory everytime I try to pair.

As far as the apple watch screen itself, once I am past the initial pairing screen, it remains on the below image until pairing fails on the iphone.

All of the steps in that tutorial have been followed - except for updating Watch OS to the most recent version, as indicated by the phone's inability to pair because of a pending update. As far as I know, there is not a way to load an update on the watch until it has been successfully paired. The watch has been unpaired, and factory reset multiple times. It has also been powered off and on multiple times. Step 4 of "Set up your Apple Watch - Apple Support" is where the process breaks down, I am unable to either get the update to download and install, or skip the update and pair anyway.

The iphone is at the latest version possible (15.6.1), and has no beta seed or update files downloaded. The iphone has been restarted multiple times, has had its network settings reset, and has been fully reset and restored by backup. The previous watch paired to the phone and icloud account has been unpaired, reset, and removed the icloud account.
