Capital letters not working

All of a sudden, when I press shift for a capital letter, the screen immediately shrinks in size and stops functioning. If I press shift again, the screen goes back to normal size but still will not print capitals. I read in an old reply that if you press caps lock, you can type a capital and the window does not shrink, which what I am doing now. You must then press the caps lock key again to turn it off and print lower case, as it normally works. I am using a MacPro with Monterey 12.5.1.

You are NOT supposed to select Left Shift in any of these; but the fact that you get a yellow warning is relevant to our troubleshooting. It suggests that this key has been assigned to something else. I don’t know what that is but I am pretty sure that it must be something in Accessibility.

See if you can find something In System Preferences->Accessibility. I won’t be able to test any of this until later today but I will let you know if I find something.

TO SUM IT UP

--no capitals unless caps lock is on / can't type symbols

--hitting the shift key makes the window shrink until I hit it again

By "hitting" the shift key, do you mean that you press and release the key? Then press and release again to return to normal?

Or do you mean that while you press and hold the shift key, the window shrinks, and then it returns to normal when you release the shift key?

Also: when you say "shrink", does it mean that you are into the Mission Control interface, with all available windows, grouped by application, or something else?

Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

Hi Luis,

I was following a suggestion from another Community member. I pressed f1 and nothing happened. Don't know if I was supposed to do something.

In MC there are 3 windows. First has up arrow, second down arrow. in bottom box, I selected left shift which then appears in the box but has a tiny yellow triangle next to it with exclamation point. I left it at left shift in MC but the problem is the same -- screen shrinks when I hit left shift.

I shut down and started it again -- no change.

I tried to open in safe mode by following Mac instructions - turn off, hit power button, press and hold the shift at the same time -- I used the right shift which still works. It just opened as usual., not with safe mode screen. I did this 3 times and each time it didn't open safe mode. Is there another way to do it

The last part is normal. The Caps Lock key only changes the letters to uppercase, it does not affect digits or other symbols.

Does this happen with both Shift keys (the one on the left and the one on the right in your keyboard)?

It only happens with the left shift and I think that is the one causing the problem.

when I want to type one capital and press the shift key, the window shrinks down and does not take any new typing. I have to hit caps lock to enlarge the window and type the capital, then turn it off and continue on in lower case, as you usually would. I guess this is something I could get used to doing, but the other issue is that if I need to type a symbol like a dollar sign, where you usually type shift and number 4, the shift makes the screen shrink. But If I type it with the caps lock on, I get whatever is on the bottom of the symbol key. For example, with caps lock on, you get the number 4, not the dollar sign.

Is there a way to fix just the one key .. question mark.

Under Accessibility/keyboard, the box for 'turn zoom on or off' was checked so I unchecked it to see if that helps.

Then I went to a new doc and I could type lower case the first time. If I hit caps lock, it works normally both on and off.

However, any time after that, when I hit the left shift again to get one capital, the window shrinks and shows the whole desktop .Then I hit shift again and it comes back to size. Then I can type lower case, but still no capitals unless caps lock is on. As mentioned above, with it on, I cannot type any symbols on the upper part of the key.

TO SUM IT UP

--no capitals unless caps lock is on / can't type symbols

--hitting the shift key makes the window shrink until I hit it again

Please let mr know if there are any settings I should change.

Thank you

YES, I mean pressing the key. If caps lock is on, i can type capitals but cannot access the symbol keys. I understand from a previous post that this is normal.

When i turn off the lock and then press the shift key, the all open boxes on the screen get small and i cannot type anything. This happens when i just While screen is shrunk, i can bring it back to size by pressing shift key again and then typing lower case.

i usually have one to four open windows at any time, usually in different applications. They shrink down just like the one i am working on. This has never been a problem. I do not understand what you mean by Mission Control, but i never open it while this is happening. I rarely open it.

As you will see on the etrecheck report, my battery is about to die. I don't know if this is contributing to the problem. I understand batteries are very expensive and not worth getting one for a 2017 machine, so I will have to replace it. Maybe I should live with this problem until the new refurbished one arrives. However, not being able to type symbols is a problem.

I am attaching the etrecheck report of 9/9/22. Let me know if you cannot open it.

Thanks

Well, all the windows shrinking looks like Mission Control... do you get something similar to this image?
