Why does "show desktop" not work?

I used Mission Control to set up a hot corner for show desktop. However, when I use it, the desktop does not appear, rather an odd looking window with gray border.

I will attach a picture of it. What it should show is an open Desktop folder with many folders in it.

Any idea what is wrong?

Thanks for your help.

There was no difference setting up other corners to do this. Then I did safeboot and it then worked as expected. So I realized it was some other app that was interfering. Was able to determine it was the app Hidden that hides the Desktop files and folders. It does not hide the window for the Desktop when it is open, but for some reason using the "Show Desktop" it did hide that when the Desktop came up. Turned it off, and all works as expected.

Again, thanks for the help. Another problem solved.

Hey Richard I do have a few suggestions to try.

  1. Make sure your macOS is updated.
  2. Let’s maybe try to redo our hot corner set up and see if that helps just in case it is some settings issue with communicating to the OS.
  3. Let’s see if it responds the same way in safe mode if still no change after 1 & 2. If you have the same issue in safe mode let’s try a test user with standard or admin permissions and see if the same issue displays with the test user account. If no issues in our test user account let’s reboot and log back in with our main account and see if that resolves the issue.
  4. If all fails and we still have issues we could try reinstalling MacOS.
