Try the following and then test:
Please restart the computer in Safe Mode per the directions in the How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support link.
Note: If you are using a wireless keyboard please either plug it in using the supplied Lightning cable that shipped with it. If you are using a legacy keyboard or a third-party keyboard that does not have re-charging abilities, please use any USB keyboard. Also note that a Safe Mode restart may require you to hold down the shift key for up to 5 minutes before the computer starts in Safe Mode. You will know it is in Safe Mode when you see “Safe Mode” in the upper right of the display.
After restarting in Safe Mode, then restart normally and test.
It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. The report we are requesting does NOT provide any personal information and is extremely safe to use. Please navigate to www.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.
When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

By no data we. have no idea of what has been installed on that may rule out a software issue so we are just left guessing. As I mentioned you should take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider not some local repair shop. AASP's are trained and have the tools and experience to work on Macs, most general computer shops simply don't have that. If you need help finding an Apple Authorized Service Provider then you can call AppleCare (800) 275-2273 (USA #) and they will help you find one. If you are outside the USA please click AppleCare Contact Info to find the number in your country.
I was able to find a little information on Assurion, It seems like a large company however I cannot tell if the are an Apple Authorized Service Provider or just work on any type of computer.
I created a new admin account, and rebooted in safe mode
I no longer get the message to reset the time.
However now i get 'can't establish secure connection to server ...' message.
Next idea?
Thanks for your help!
Rick
The imac cannot connect to etrecheck because I get the message 'can't establish a secure connection'. I already had etrecheck on my main computer (the one I am using here), and I drug it onto a zip drive and plugged into the imac in question. But I do not see the zip drive, even though the drive is lit on the USB port.
1) How do I find it on the imac? ( I may just not know what I am looking for on the old machine, but it is not on the desktop and I don't see it in finder.)
2) Alternatively, I have the original install disks for the OS 10.6.6 that came with it. Should I go ahead and reinstall tihe OS? And if so, what are the steps?
Thank you so much for your help,
Rick
You need to take the computer to your local Apple Authorized Service Provider, if it is older than a 2017, please take it to an independent (non Apple Store) Apple Authorized Service Provider. We cannot help you if we don't have any data on the computer.
By chance is there any third party antivirus, cleaning or any other third party maintenance apps installed?
I took it to a chain store called something like 'YouBreakIFix', now Assuron, when the harddrive died. They replaced the hard drive with another that I can hear two rooms away, but they are so inept I won't go back. They had two tries to fix it.
There is no third party software or antivirus of any kind on it. Forgive my rudeness, but what do you mean 'no data on the computer'? The OS is there, and I have set up two users. There is one screenshot I took, and I can get onto sites like BBC.com and NPR.org. Stickies work. There is a folder of some medical info, and an image opens with Preview. Word docs open with Textedit. I can move around on the imac well enough.
I'll be fine to take it elsewhere, but does the above answer the 'no data' question? Again, not to be rude, only to understand.
Thank you. Rick
Update: I tried two zip drives, and the imac will not see either. I verified they are ok on my main computer, this one.

Oh, and I composed and successfully sent an email. It appears on other devices, but not on the imac because, well, it doesn't connect?
