Asus Monitor VA27EHE not connecting to M1 with USB C Hub and HDMI cable (but showing up as a display in settings, just no screen activity)
I figured it out! (for me at least) READ ON... This will probably work with any monitor having these issues.
There was a long thread about this that I couldn't reply to earlier. I just struggled with this issue for a few hours and didn't see this answer in the last thread. (I may have not read every reply, but felt like I did).
It was kind of a duh moment, but all I did was lower the refresh rate from 75 Hertz to 60 Hertz (or 50) and it works like a charm now. I did not see that in any previous replies. Hope this helps!
Here are the steps I did on Monterey 12.5.1 MacBook Air M1.
- Open system preferences
- Click on "Displays" (probably bottom left corner)
- If your secondary monitor shows up as a second display, hover your mouse over it to see if the name of your secondary monitor pops up. If it does, great! (** If it doesn't, skip to second half of these instructions)
- Now click "Display Settings". You should see two options on the left of that window. Both should say your Mac's name on the first line. The one that says something like "Built-In Retina Display" should be already selected as your main display. I suggest leaving it set as main display until problem is fully resolved!
- Click on the second one (Which should say the name of the secondary monitor you have plugged in). Do not make the secondary monitor your main display if your secondary monitor is not visible! I made the mistake of trying to make it my main display and basically lost control of my computer. If this happens to you write a reply and I'll tell you how I fixed it. It was a little tricky.
- With Display Settings open, click "Refresh Rate" and select the lowest value. Give it a few seconds, see what happens. This should work. It will probably automatically select "Scaled" above refresh rate and bring up some values. Mine worked best at 1920x1080 and 60 Hertz. Try different refresh rates and resolution values to see what works best for you.
If your second monitor didn't pop up when it is powered on try this.
- See the "Night Shift" button in the bottom right? Press and hold your "option" button on your keyboard. Night Shift should turn into "Detect Displays". Click that and see if it gets you anywhere. Then try the above steps again if you get the monitor to detect.
Good luck! Please reply if this helped you out or if you have any questions.
