software update

Updated my 13" Mac, 2017? Monterey 12.4 in July 2022. Error occurred. Choose the start up disk and wheel spins indefinitely. Every time I try to sign in it does this after about a half hour. End up with the spinning wheel of death!

Troubleshooting a Rotating Wheel:

Four Things to Try:

A. Mount the Hard Drive in Disk Utility:

While booted into Recovery Mode [Hold Down: command + R keys upon boot], go to Disk Utility> tap the Hard Drive, then tap the Mount button. See if you can then install it. If it is already mounted, then unmount it and then remount it. See where you can go from there.

B. Seeing your Your Hard Drive is Failing:

Run First Aid and see if things are fixed.

  1. Boot: into Recovery Mode (Hold Down: [command + R] upon boot)
  2. Select: Disk Utility
  3. Select: the Drive
  4. Click: First Aid button

C. Reset your SMC and your NVRAM:

Sometimes changes are made to the system and then settings (i.e. for Wi-Fi) become corrupted, in the meanwhile. So, reset both on your Mac. See where it goes from there. It’s worth a go.

D. Try Safe Mode:

In Safe Mode, login items do not run, and corrupt system files(i.e. caches) are intentionally reset as a way to fix issues

  1. Boot: in to Safe Mode: [Hold Down: shift key upon boot].
  2. Log in: as same user
  3. Wait: 30 seconds
  4. Restart; your Mac
  5. Log in: as same user

Yes you are correct: Time to take it to the experts.

To Get this Hard Drive Serviced...

Contact Apple, and setup a Genius Bar Appointment or see an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) in your local area. As for data recovery, that my be in the thousands(IOW: “Extremely Expensive”).

IMPORTANT NOTE:

So, did you ever create a backup of your Mac prior to all of this. If so, restore from the Mac from it. If not, take this as a learning experience, knowing to always back up your devices every-so-often. That way, you can have something to should anything go wrong with the reinstall. Once reinstalled, try this once more.

Contact Apple:

  • Contact Us - Choose Locations
  • Proceed from there as Necessary
  • NOTE: Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, calls are taking a bit linger to get through. And, that makes sense, because many are at home working out-of-the-house or are taking classes over-the-web, this they have more time on their hands to contact Apple Support. So, it might take a bit to get through to Apple Support. But, just stay on the line, and someone will be with you.

Or...

Contact an AASP:

  1. Go Here: Find Locations - Apple Authorized Reseller
  2. Click: Service & Support
  3. Enter: your location information
  4. See: if there is an AASP nearby
  5. Contact: an AASP that shows up, and find out more about the services that they offer to replace the hard drive.
