I am worried about my Word documents, which are the most important ones for me. How do I back those up? Does anyone know?

Buy an external drive and make copies of them on that drive.
Upload them, or drag them to another drive, or set up Time Machine or another backup product.

The only backup capability on iCloud is your iOS devices (as described in your linked article).
It doesn't back up macOS at all. As noted by Niel, you need to decide on what backup system to use and enable it.
