pudlowww,
Let's check the Battery Health to make sure no difficulties with your battery are being reported there:
iPhone Battery and Performance - Apple Support
If that menu isn't reporting any issues with your battery, and you continue to see higher than expected use by the Messages app, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support so they can look into this further: Contact - Official Apple Support
Take care.
Hi pudlowww,

Why is my battery draining so fast? - Apple Community
The reason we ask you to take a look at the thread above is because the discussion is similar to the issue that you are experiencing.
If you're still having the same problem after looking at the thread we provided, do not hesitate to reach back out to the community with some specifics on what you see for more help.

Thank you for your response. I might be doing something wrong but for example i have sent/recieved 12 short text messages that included 8 emojis yesterday and noticed iMessages used 62% of my battery. is that normal?
thank you so much - when i look at battery health all looks good. i will reach out to support. appreciate your quick replies

62% of your entire battery or 62% of the small amount if battery actually used in that period?
