One-way sync (from MacBook to Usb flash drive)

I make changes to files in a folder with subfolders on my MacBook Air (M1).

When I want to update the back-up folder in my USB flash drive with the changes, I have to look for the old files (in the USB) and then replace them with the new (updated) ones.

Is there a way to do this automatically so that I don't have to spend time looking for the old files in my USB?

Thank you.

PS I'm already backing up the files on iCloud, but I need to use a flash drive at work because we don't have a reliable and stable internet connection. Downloading folders from iCloud is impossible, hence my question...

Hi ioanna1209,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

It sounds like what you are seeking is Time Machine functionality. A flash drive would not be suitable for a Time Machine, but a portable external hard drive would be.

You can read more about Time Machine and how to set it up here: Back up your Mac with Time Machine

"Create a Time Machine backup

  1. Connect an external storage device, such as a USB or Thunderbolt drive. Learn more about backup disks that you can use with Time Machine.
  2. Open Time Machine preferences from the Time Machine menu  in the menu bar. Or choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Time Machine.
  3. Click Select Backup Disk.
  4. Select the name of your disk, then click Use Disk. Time Machine immediately begins making periodic backups—automatically and without further action by you."

Have a fantastic day!
