connect an older monitor to a new M1 pro chip equipped MBP

I just got a brand new MBP and wanted to connect it to my monitor I have been using very successfully with my older MBP (late 2012) with a Thunderbolt to Display port on the monitor. I tried to use a HDMI cable to connect my new MBP through the HDMI port on both and got a very strange experience when the display jumped on and off all over. Preferably I would like to get a powered dock or converter to connect my monitor and my USB devises through my port(s) on the new MBP. Is that possible?

Connectivity

DisplayPort in

Mini DisplayPort

DisplayPort out

HDMI (MHL)

Speaker-line out

4 x USB 3.0 downstream

1 x USB upstream

so an HDMI cable will work, BUT: it must meet these specs:

HDMI cables you want for HDMI-only Monitors (higher resolutions than 720p TV sets) are marked as Certified with an anti-counterfeiting tag and are labeled:

"Premium High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "with Ethernet" --OR--

"Ultra High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "48G"

Cables with No Certification tags are good for your standard 720p TV set, and not much more.

Thank you, that definitely makes sense. Now, if I use the Apple USB-C AV Multiport Adapter could I use my existing HDMI cable plus have a connection for my existing back-up drives and lightning cables plus CD drive and other peripherals, or would it be too taxing for just one port. I have been looking at dock solutions but think I will need one with it's own power supply. Any thoughts?
