I recently changed my password for Apple ID from the Mac. On the iPhone I can't update the password because the system preferences -> Apple ID menu item is disabled... it keeps popping up for me to enter new password but doesn't recognize the new password. So now even though on Mac and other devices I can use the new password but on this one device (my main phone) I can't update the password.
Is screen time on? You might want to go to settings>screen time>privacy and content restrictions and see if allow changes is on, if not, turn that on and try to go into your Apple ID settings again

Can you sign out of your Apple ID and then sign back in using the new password?

Thanks WheelieNick… turning it off enabled the system preference-) apple id menu option to update the password.
