Connection type for external drive on MacBook Pro

Is a USB C adapter needed to connect an external HD to a new MacBook Pro ?

It depends on the cable you have for the external HD. If it is a USB-C cable, not adapter is needed. If it is a USB cable then see: USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple

or use a 3rd party adapter such as (not tested by me): https://www.amazon.com/Syntech-Adapter-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook/dp/B07CVX3516/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=usb+c+to+usb+adapter&qid=1663020413&sr=8-3
