Loud static when connecting airpods Pro

Hi,

I've had an issue for a while that when one of my airpod pros connects (the left) it makes a loud static noise for about 4-5 seconds.

After that the connection is fine, I don't get hissing or static when in use unless I'm adjusting the airpod in my ear, or pressing the stem to change track etc. I can't hear the 'click' as the static overpowers this.

The right airpod does this occasionally when I reposition it, just not the 4-5s of static when connects like the other ear.

I can't find anything about this specific static when only connecting.

Model is A2084, version 4E71 (looks like the latest firmware), bought in late 2019.

Update: as I was checking the serial number I've discovered this static only occurs when noise cancelling is switched on.

Any help appreciated!

Hello Ed,

Try resetting the AirPods to see if that resolves the issue: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support

  1. "Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid of your charging case.
  4. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods. (If you don't see your AirPods in Settings > Bluetooth, just go to the next step.)
  5. Tap Forget This Device, and tap again to confirm.
  6. With the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber, then white.*
  7. AirPods charging cases
  8. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Follow the steps on your device's screen."

If the issue persists, the behavior sounds like it may be related to the AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues. Check out those details here: If your AirPods Pro make crackling or static sounds - Apple Support
