IOS 16 update not syncing iTunes playlist

iTunes updated the latest version last night and installed the latest IOS update on my phone IOS 16- now my playlists (set up on iTunes) no longer show up on my phone. Can anyone help? Both iTunes and phone latest versions. Signed in on both on correct Apple ID. Previously when my iPhone synced on iTunes I could select playlists I wanted synced. Now when my phone is connected the music section is empty.

When you have a subscription to Apple Music or iTunes Match the idea is that you enable Sync Library in both your computer and your device. Your device gets all playlists and music synced to it via the cloud. You can choose, on the device, which songs, albums, artists, or playlists, to download to the device so that they don't have to be streamed. Additions and edits to your library update everywhere automatically. But you no longer sync over USB.

Mine is doing almost the exact same thing. Since updating to iOS 16: first it messed up my album art. On trying to fix that, then Apple Music decided almost my entire library needed to duplicate itself on the phone. Then, upon trying to delete all the music off of the phone, now it will only sync ~660 of the 3400 songs I keep in my normal rotation. I have absolutely no idea how to fix this. iOS 16.2 on iPhone 13 trying to sync to iTunes 12.12 on PC running Windows 10. Absolutely none of the fixes suggested on these forums by Apple actually work. I should be able to click sync on my library when the phone is connected to the PC and it simply sync.

In my case, all my music simply disappeared from my computer. The listings and album photos remained. Only the music flew away. On three occasions/computers one after another. And using different iphones and ipod.

I had the case escalated to an “engineer.” He was adamant that the reason was that it was due to the artists’ rights against unauthorized distribution. I asked him about music that was recorded in house and several voice memos. None of which had copyright protection. He had no valid response.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like he was making things up. Media on your computer, that doesn't come from the Apple Music subscription service, should never be removed unless you explicitly choose to remove it. That said things can and will go wrong from time to time and people can make mistakes. You should keep backups of your library and media to guard against the unexpected.
