Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. With the HDMI TV adapter, is it manufactured by a third party company or are you using the Apple branded Lightning Digital AV Adapter or Lightning to VGA Adapter?
If you're using one of the Apple branded adapters, we suggest to follow these steps as it can help resolve your issue:
Get help
Find out what to do when you have the following issues.
If you see video but can't hear audio
Make sure that you're using a Digital AV adapter (which has an HDMI port). If you're using a VGA adapter, it doesn't carry audio signals. To hear audio with a VGA adapter, you need to connect to the headset jack on your TV, monitor, projector, or stereo.
If an app doesn't display video or play audio
The app might not be compatible with your adapter. Check compatibility on the app's info page in the App Store or contact the developer.
If an alert says that an HDCP-compatible device is required
Your content might not be compatible with your adapter. Movies, TV shows, and certain streaming video apps require High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). If you try to play these movies, shows, and streaming videos using a non-HDCP digital connection—like the Apple VGA Adapter—an alert will ask for an HDCP-compatible device.
If you need help with other issues
1.Disconnect and reconnect your adapter from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and from your TV, monitor, or projector.
2.Make sure that your VGA or HDMI cable works, since the issue could be with the cable.
3.Remove any VGA or HDMI extension cables or converters. Accessories that convert a VGA or HDMI signals to different video formats (DVI, Composite, Component) aren't compatible.
4.Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS.

I am having the same issues. Prime is skipping and no volume. HBO Max will work but you have to try it multiple times first. Hard to believe this is Apple. All their stuff used to work flawlessly.
It’s too bad we can’t go back to an earlier iOS version so we can use this! I’m a caregiver with a dementia patient and it really helps pass time! Apple needs to fix this! 45$ for a product that doesn’t do what it is supposed to!

It is generally considered polite to abide by someone's rules when you are in their house. You come into my house, you take your shoes off. This forum is Apple's house. Therefore, their rules.
Let’s define rude. I have thousands of dollars in purchased movies. That I cannot watch under the legal rules and and the rules of purchase. I cannot get answers! It’s one thing to ask a guest to take off his shoes , it’s another to steal his shoes and deny any knowledge.

Went up north to cabin- plug my Lightning/HDMI cord in to watch movies like I do when we are up there- antenna is spotty- tried to stream my Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, and Paramount Plus and NOTHING would have sound!!! Just a picture…. Read every comment and I’m extremely upset for buying this $45 adapter that I only get to use on my weekends at the cabin! I see this issue has been going on since September 2022! This should have been fixed by now! Please get this fixed somehow! Thank you!
they’re not gonna fix it. And plain to see they don’t care about the issue at all. And clear they don’t care about our comments until they see something they don’t approve of and only then do you get an immediate response. A warning. Big deal. Block me Tough guys
Maybe we should all head over to our closest BestBuy and put a sticky note on these adapters that says,
“DOES NOT WORK WITH iOS16”
Take a pic and post it on FaceBook with an Apple tag for maximum effect.
Just a thought.
I have same issue with four Apple products. All worked fine until they were updated to latest operating system. Very dissatisfying that Apple representatives have no clue to issue other than trying to sell you another cable. I thought Apple was better than Microsoft but see they don’t care anymore. Time to replace Apple products.
Watched the first 15 minutes or so of Slow Horses, Apple lightning to HDMI on iPhone XS iOS 16.2.
Apple TV app. Had to start the show on the phone first then plug in the cable to see it on tv. After image froze switched to iPad mini wit usb C connection.
