Command-Q did not shut down the MacBook Air. Had to use the power key.

In preparation instructions for returning a MacBook Air for trade in, the instructions say to press Command-Q to terminate the setup sequence. I tried to use this command several times without any response from the Mac... Had to use the power key.

Shutdown Mac from Setup Assistant I would like to be able to shutdown from the Setup Assistant screen in MacOS Monterey. The device is a MacBook Pro from 2020. I used to be able to do this in previous versions of MacOS. However, the key combination Command-Q seems to no longer work. Every time I press it, it just makes a pop sound as if I had pressed an invalid key and there are no messages or prompts. How can I properly shutdown MacOS from the Setup Assistant without completing it? Thanks.

Reset SMC from command line, macbook pro, OS Sierra Hi all, wondering how I can reset SMC from command line. I have an old macbook pro that has sentimental value that is otherwise working fine but it's exhibiting clear SMC issues (fan spinning up spontaneously for no reason, macbook sometimes powers up sometimes doesn't [which is unrelated to actual battery charge], battery shows up as dead in the menu bar, but computer starts up just fine, the lights on the battery charge indicator do not turn on, etc.). There's a problem with the built-in keyboard - because of heavy use left side Shift key stopped working a while ago, so I can't use the Shift+Control+Option method, since I can't use the right side Shift key for it. I'm a software engineer, so would have no problem digging into the innards of the system and changing something out in VIM. I know there must be a place where this can be done from command line, I just need to know the specifics. Thanks for any help!

It sounds like you have an M1 or a 2018 to 2020 MacBook Air. Holding the power key would be normal in that case as explained.
