Homekit Automations are broken in iOS 16

Since iOS 16 HomeKit automations aren't triggered reliably. Simple timed automations like "Open Shutters at 9am" are triggered randomly. All my Hubs, Homepods, iPhones, etc are up-to-date, restarted, reseted all the devices, recreated all the automations, but still not reliable.

My only solution at the moment is to schedule the automations with the accessories' own hub. (eg. IKEA light automations are set in IKEA's own app, and my Bosch smart home shutters are scheduled within Bosch's app) It works, but would be better to see everything within Apple's Home.

Same here. On 16.0 (20A362) and my automations are broken. I:

  • restarted my phone
  • restarted my hubs
  • restarted the Philips Hue hub
  • disabled and re-enabled existing automations
  • deleted and recreated some automations

Nothing has resolved the issue. I too will need to setup these automations in the 3rd-party branded hub the accessories are connected to until they fix this.

Hi all,

Since we have iOS 16.0.2 installed we have the following problem:

We have 4 automation's, 2 for leaving of 2 persons and 2 for arriving for 2 persons. Before the iOS update it worked perfect. Now when we are at home suddenly all lights went off because it seems that the iPhones were signed as "leaving" the home. But we still inside the house.

We try to check everything to solve this, change radius of the house inside Homekit, but that isn't possible.

Also tried to remove the automations and given a point in the street with a bigger radius. But then its not working because Homekit will turn everyone to leave when 1 of the 2 persons is leaving. (In every automation we select just 1 person. So 2 for person 1 Arrive, Leaving and 2 again for other person for Arrive, Leaving)

Only sollution will be to revert back to iOS 15.x but that is not a solution. How can we solve this?

Well, just did a complete re-installation of all bridges and devices etc to a new home.

32 devices

26 sensors

3 bridges

43 automations

4 scenes

Linked to home assistant, homebridge on Synology and an appleTV.

It was very painful to do this but ping me in a few days again to see if it still works. 😂

So far so go but only active for three hours.

Apple SW engineers are aware of this problem, but individual issues are very unique so be certain to go to apple.com/feedback, select Home and submit particulars of your Home issue. My problems only involves new Thread devices that were working perfectly prior to iOS 16 install. My Home App will now not even allow me to add back any new Thread devices, but I can add back any new non-Thread devices. But some users have different problems that what I am experiencing. You can also use the Apple Support App on your iPhone to submit a concern about Home App. And do place a call to Apple Support so they can walk you through on how to send them your specific data in your Home App logs. The more info Apple has the sooner we might get an explanation and a fix. From what I have read in this community postings, we all are experiencing different specific issues with Home App..

I’ve got the same issue. For me it’s the last straw with HomeKit. There isn’t a lot of choice for HomeKit equipment, some I’ve had are no longer supported (after a fairly short time) and it’s been unreliable for me. Currently scrapping all HomeKit junk and going with a zwave and zigbee system. I know it doesn’t help you but I needed a quick vent.

Thanks, and I fully understand. Before HK I had a great stable, dependable and expansive UD ISY-994 smart-home system with over 300 devices. We were controlling our FL home from Middle East work location. Stupidly -- as someone who too quickly locked into the Apple Eco System, I retired my ISY system snd started buying HK stuff. I expanded every month and all worked fine and was happy except for the lame timers and automation restrictions/limitation compared to UD ISY. But it all ended with iOS16. This tells me Apple is not serious about Home App. They need to hire folk from UD.

Yes I think you are correct. It’s not central to what they do but rather an idea they had once and haven’t put much into it. The fact the ecosystem is so small and that they are so controlling of the device manufacturers (rather than using existing standards) is probably indicative of where it will go. I liked the idea but my experience with it has been less than ideal and it has been extremely slow to develop. I think my way forward is a better ecosystem that do this stuff as their main business with perhaps a bridge to iOS.

For me it was so easy to use homekit. Because its part of iOS. I can create automations for me and my friend.

To do it different I always have to ask to install a app, to update something etc....

Im using Home Assistant. So in homekit I created automations to turn on or off a switch. This switch is used in Home Assistant for lot of automations in the house.

But since iOS 16. Sometimes iOS thinks we left the house because the geofence is moved little bit and then out of range, even we still connected visa WiFi.... This was never happen on iOS 15.x

You can imagine this is horrible, because if we left home (we are still inside the house) then all lights, tv, etc went off. Because HomeKit thinks we left. But within 1 or 2 minutes the geofence point is good again even we still connected on WiFi then lights turn on again. This also happen at night.... When we sleep...

Well I hope they get this fixed soon the workarounds seem all over the place but I do not want to install my automations even though I certainly dont have as many or even “crucial” ones just some security light setups mainly for when gone, except one room that I always have going.

Keep us posted if they tell you anything more. I am not sure what all the issues are here. But this seems to be one of the biggest problems affecting users since devices updated to 16.x I have seen.
