Series 1 AirPods

My AirPods work fine for 1 minute, then the R pod cuts out. A reset works but then the same thing will happens again 😲. Both are capable of working properly but only for 1 minute, which means what used to be an excellent set of AirPods is now useless.

I know that these AirPods are old now (series 1) but when they both worked perfectly, I was more than happy with the performance and quality of sound. I don't think I should have to pay full price for a replacement set (I would go for series 3) just because my first set are consistantly faulty. I know they are not under warrentee anymore but we pay enough for our Apple devices, and many of them too, so I think Apple Customer Support should be willing to do the right thing by their customers, who make them as successful as they are, and give a discount for the replacements of Apple goods that are faulty.

Apple Genius Bar can't say what the problem is but have offered to 'repair' the faulty (R) AirPod for £65 which really means they will supply a (new) replacement R pod for list price. I would still have a set of series 1 AirPods and the L one could also fail at any time 🤔.

My other choice is to buy replacement set of non-Apple Pods, which will probably be a lot cheaper but also not as good or as easy to use with other Apple devices.

Does anyone else agree with me or am I on my own on this one❓

Hi G3t1nT0uch,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

It sounds like your AirPods were properly diagnosed as faulty at the Genius Bar. Of course choosing to purchase new AirPods is your own personal choice. However if you choose to have this pair serviced, you can follow this page: AirPods Replacement, Repair, & Service. There would not be any sort of trade-in discount for a new pair.

Have a fantastic day!

Hi MichaelB2019,

Thanks for your response to my AirPods fault.

Yes, the Genius Bar did test my AirPods and confirmed what I already knew - that the R AirPod has a fault but they did not offer any explanation as to what the fault might be.

I would find it easier to accept this issue if the R AirPod had stopped working completely but because after a reset, it works perfectly for a short time and then completely cuts out again, this indicates that the R AirPod has the capability of functioning properly, but not for very long 😩. The L AirPod continues to work perfectly.

This suggests to me that there is something, either hardware or software, that is causing the R AirPod to consistently malfunction in the way I have described and I am sure it would be possible to establish what it is that is causing this fault.

I have tested the AirPods on various Apple and non-Apple devices and the result is exactly the same so this would suggest the fault is within the R AirPods.

I am not prepared to right-off my AirPods and therefore request that a further, more thorough test be carried out to establish the cause of this strange situation.

As I have already tried the Genius Bar option, I don't think another Genius Bar appointment would be sufficient to get to the bottom of this problem so I would be happy to send my AirPods off to a suitable Apple Centre where further testing could be carried out to establish the route cause of this frustrating issue that I have experienced with my AirPods.

Thank you for your continued attention to this matter. I will look forward to receiving a response from you, with your advice as to the next step I need to take to progress with this issue.
