So to ensure that we fully understand, you're seeing a text message notification on the Messages app. If you open the app, do any messages show unread or is everything showing as read?

If everything is read, then we'd recommend toggling off the notifications for Messages and then turning back on with the steps listed at Change message notifications on iPhone - Apple Support. You'll go to "Settings  > Notifications > Messages" and turn off Notifications and then turn it back on.
