Potential oversights within the iPhone 14's eSIM program
Hello Apple community,
To provide a bit of context, I am a Geek Squad Advanced Repair Agent who was recently appointed to be our precinct's Apple Pro. As exciting as the new iPhone 14 lineup is, I wanted to share my concerns about the new mandatory "eSIM-only" feature that I believe could potentially cause serious headaches for myself, my coworkers, and other Apple authorized service providers like Geek Squad.
1.) Whenever we check in a device for a screen repair, depending on the extent of its damage we run pre-repair diagnostics like Mobile Resource Inspector and Face ID. If we are unable to read the device's serial number from the Settings app, we instead use the IMEI number on the underside of the SIM card tray. Given that the new devices will not have a physical SIM card tray, it would be helpful to know how Apple will allow Geek Squad or other AASP's to obtain the serial number and run diagnostics before we take the device apart.
2.) In the event of a Whole Unit Replacement, one thing our precinct does as a courtesy to the client (which I believe is required) is to give them their SIM card back so that they can easily set up their new device after they receive it. Given that there obviously won't be a physical SIM card to give back, what tools will we be given to remove the client's cellular information before we need to ship the device out?
I'm sure that Apple is well aware of these potential issues and will be able to teach us how to avoid them. Any answers provided will be extremely helpful for my success, as I anticipate and look forward to working on them in the near future.
Sincerely,
Agent Josh
