iPod Classic 7th Gen shows red X in the middle of charging

My iPod shows a red X and it happened in the middle of charging. iTunes also dosent show anything about an iPod at all. I turn it on. It stays on the apple logo for a long time. Then it shows a white screen. I restart the iPod and then it shows the apple logo. After that it shows “Charging. Please wait.” I wait for it to charge then about a minute later, I get this:

When I restart the iPod, what I just said happens all over again.

The hard drive has probably failed. See If you see a red X icon on your iPod classic or iPod nano (5th generation or earlier) - Apple Support (archived copy). You could consider swapping out the drive with some form of SD adaptor kit.

Ah, if it is a really low battery then that might be why the drive cannot start properly. Check for fluff in the docking port, try another cable, and charge from the original adaptor or a standard USB port on a computer. Other adaptors may potentially supply too much current which causes the charging circuit to shut down. As for stats read the Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode section of the user tip.

It seems to be charging when I plugged it into the computer, and I let it fully charge. It works fine. Yesterday it went dead so I plugged it up, and then it did the use iTunes to restore. I guess it’s like a game of don’t let the iPod go dead or else you have to repair it with a computer. What I think is strange is I’ve charged the iPod in the exact places in my house before and it charged fine.

I used diagnostic mode and the part on the accessorize test, I plugged the charger in. The USB_DETECT stayed at 0. If I’m correct it should change to 1. When I restarted it, it said connect to power. I plugged it in. And now its back to its Connect to iTunes to restore. I’m going to restore it again. During the do not disconnect screen, it’s charging!

And just as I thought it would work, it gave me a red X. I reset it and it was recovering, and I got back to where the iPod should be.

I have no idea what I just did but I got to the welcome screen. I’ll be sure to tell you if anything goes wrong again

EDIT: Aw it went back to the apple logo and now it’s making weird clicking and beeping noises

EDIT 2: Got back to the welcome screen but I bet it will go back to the apple logo. I plugged it in and it’s on the charging screen. I think the red X will appear again

EDIT 3: I got to the do not disconnect screen and iTunes recognized it! I think I can restore it from here.
