iPhone 14 Pro Battery Draining Fast

Anybody have a clue why the iPhone 14 pro battery is draining like a Samsung? My 13 pro and 13 pro max battery was so much better.. I’m lucky to get through the day with the new 14 pro battery!! What’s going on? Is this because of the new always on display?

Update: The battery is fine. It’s the particular Astronomy Lock Screen and always on display that was killing battery. I guess because the globe rendering is live 3D, the battery drain is higher when combined with always on display. A regular static image doesn’t drain the battery like this.

No it is not impossible. The iPhone 14 series claims to have much better battery life than older phones, and a lot of the people I work and communicate with have found that to be true.

What can cause battery drain in an iPhone 14 is a weak 5G signal. My T-Mobile phone has a switch option to automatically go to LTE if the 5G energy use is excessive.

And it isn’t. Wi-Fi uses essentially NO energy when not connected to a network transferring data. And you should not turn Wi-Fi off away from home; it is essential for Find My and any mapping program to work. It uses the location of known Wi-Fi networks to improve the accuracy of GPS and to find your location when GPS is not available, which is any time there is anything blocking a clear view of the sky, such as trees, tall buildings, and, of course, indoors.

While it is true a hardware issue or bad battery can be the cause of power loss, it's not very common.

By far the most common is an app that is using far more battery power than it should, either because it is improperly querying other parts of the operating system or due to just poor programming practice.

The battery graph will tell you the battery is draining; the list of apps and the battery power they have used will tell you which apps are using power and how much.

And I guess it doesn’t explain the large number of people who report that the iPhone 14 Pro has the best battery life of any iPhone they have ever owned.

What it does explain is that the phone itself is not the cause of the problem, because if it was EVERYONE with an iPhone 14 Pro would be complaining and there would be tens of thousands of posts about it as well as headlines in all of the tech media.

Battery energy is used by apps. Period. Nothing else uses energy except maintaining a cellular connection. If your phone is using energy at a higher rate than you think it should it is because there is an app or apps that are using energy, and the solution is to identify those apps.

The cellular connection WILL use energy, especially if your signal is very weak (1 bar), and it will use it even if you are not on the phone or using cellular data because your phone must stay in communication with the network so it knows how to route a call to your phone. But that’s a network problem, not a phone problem, and there is nothing you can do about it if you want to be able to receive calls.

Your battery health seems as if it may be severely compromised as you’re never charging to 100% and in fact barely above 75%.

Further you have not tried Low Power Mode, nor have you mentioned what Settings -> Battery shows are the apps using the most power.

I would recommend making an appointment to have your phone examined; most are having no such issues.

It's not an Apple issue; if it is software, it is a third party app software issue.

First, 5G radios use more power than older chips do. Do an Internet search and you will see it's also true for phones from other vendors.

Here's the Wall Street Journal on the subject:

5G Drains Your iPhone’s Battery. Here’s What You Can Do About It.

If you prefer:

Samsung: Samsung Battery Drains Quickly on 5G Service

Second, which older iPhones? Only iPhone 12 and 13 had 5G support and battery life is actually better with the iPhone 14.

Finally, if the battery statistics show a particular app is using most of the battery, that app is at fault or you just have to realize it will use a lot of power. Map/GPS apps will always use a lot of power because they are constantly checking where you are, how much you've moved and redrawing maps and usually retrieving traffic data and other information from the Internet.

In essence, you can't say "My iPhone 6 never…" because it was a different hardware platform, a different version of iOS, used different cellular radios that didn't support power hungry 5G and used LCD vs. OLED display technologies, among other things.

If someone finds a particular app uses 75% of their battery, that app's authors need to address that.

There are far too many variables involved for you to make that assumption.

Apple does occasionally find issues, and in those cases quickly addresses them:

iOS 15.4.1:

Battery may drain more quickly than expected after updating to iOS 15.4

and in this case the fix was released about two weeks after iOS 15.4 was released.

However, in general what happens to improve battery life is app authors learn how to properly write for the newer version of iOS, something that will obviously happen with iOS 16 as well.

If you look at past issues, it's far more common for the app author to release a new version that solves the issue.

Keeping your screen in Dark mode helps a lot also if you have auto brightness on that will effect the battery as the screen is constantly adjusting depending on the light you are in. The new screen has the highest brightness and this can consume more battery than previous iPhone screens. Also if you have haptic feedback turned on that will also drain your phone as multiple notifications come through

  1. Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.

  • Auto-Brightness: This setting automatically adjusts the screen brightness for current light conditions using the built-in ambient light sensor.

turn it off

usually when in various light conditions the ambient sensor will adjust the screen brightness to give you the best possible view of your screen. unfortunately this does consume some battery life & effect the overall percentage you will have left.

That means you are in a low signal area (likely only one bar of cellular signal.)

When you are in a low signal area your radios need to be turned up to full power and that uses a lot of battery - regardless of manufacturer or generation of phone.

There's no real way to avoid that except to enable low power mode to make sure no more data is used than necessary in those low signal areas.

There's a difference between having Find My active and having it be the front app; your earlier statement implied the former (Find My is active as an app and is in front.)

Use the Find My app to locate a missing device or item - Apple Support

If it was just the normal Find My background reporting, it is very cellular signal-dependent; in a low signal area (two bars or below) it and just normal cellular service will use a lot of battery very quickly.

How many bars of signal did you have?

Also "just checking a couple of emails" isn't that simple; just do to that means the phone has to sync with your mail server(s) using IMAP and download any new messages. Not a huge amount of data in most cases but it can be, especially if one of the new messages has lots of photos or attachments.
