iPod Video (5.5 gen) not appearing in windows/device manager/iTunes

Recently picked up a refurbished iPod off the internet. When I went to sync it with iTunes, iPod didn't appear. I checked in device manager thinking I needed to update a driver but it wasn't there either. I'm on a Dell XPS 15 (windows) using the factory USB hub to connect. I suspect that's the issue as the iPod still has a HDD installed. I don't have another pc/mac available at the moment. Any suggestions?
