Wifi „no internet connection“ issues (iOS16)

Ever since upgrading to iOS16 my two phones have serious Wifi issues. It connects to my home Wifi but the connection is sluggish and unstable and the connection receives the label „no internet connection“. I have multiple other devices including two iPads, an iPhone on iOS15, a MacBook, all of which have no issues at all. This issue has also been reported last year after iOS15 rollout here. The issue does not occur on both phones simultaneously and pretty much at random. It first appeared on my older iPhone 12 and after receiving my iPhone 14 Pro Max, which has been setup using an iCloud Backup from the 12, the problem appeared there as well immediately.

Apple Support hasn‘t been much help yet. Reset network settings, delete all VPNs, restart router, set proxy to automatic, etc… all didn‘t help. This issue is also a pain to communicate. One Apple Support guy declared the problem solved as I could load a website (yay!). So my hope is someone from the community has silently found a solution for this.

I am facing exactly similar issue with my iphone 13 pro, after updating to iOS 16.

Let me be clear here, all these suggestions below asking to check router logs or reset router won’t work, as the issue doesnt lie with router.

This issue is not router related as other devices connected to same wifi are working fine. But only iphone that had iOS 16 has issues. Internet connection suddenly drops and under wifi name “No internet connection” appears, while internet on other devices at same time is working fine.

Only after i restart my iphone, the internet issues gets resolved. It happens 2-4 times a day and is really annoying.

Resetting network settings also didnt helped.

I updated my wife’s phone and my phone and now have this same issue. All other devices still working on network but our two phones will not stay connected to ANY Wi-Fi (not just ours). I’ve tried all the usual remedies to no avail.

This is absolutely and undeniably a bug with the update. Bugs happen - they just need to be fixed and they don’t get fixed until folks accept it’s not a end-user problem.

In what world do you live in that a bug has to affect all users? I’m sorry but that is asinine. Even if it is configuration specific, that is still a bug on Apple’s end that was not there before. It worked before, it doesn’t work now. The only change was Apple’s software.

I appreciate you trying to help people but blaming the user for what is clearly a software flaw is brand guarding.

Bugs don't have to affect all users, but they will usually effect enough that there will be several complaints, and there have not been.

Software is written to standards, and if Apple's software is standards compliant and connectivity breaks because of a router issue, Apple is under no responsibility to modify their software despite it "working before."

When something breaks due to an update, it is in no way a diagnostic that it was due to a bug in Apple's software.

The example I often use is if you have a bug in a CPU where when you add 2 + 3 you get the answer 5 but when you add 3 + 2 you get the answer 6, it's not the responsibility of software authors to only ever add 2 + 3, it has to be fixed from the other end.

Note I never blamed the user, I stated the issue most likely is elsewhere simply because I have been here long enough to know how many complaints arise when an update does contain a major bug.

With something like an iOS update, tens of millions of users have downloaded it by now (ignoring the multitude of beta testers) and I guarantee most of them use WiFi a fair amount of the time.

The suggestion that you try your device at an Apple Store is a good one, as the staff at a store can also report a bug through their channels should it turn out to be one exposed when your device fails on their WiFi network as well.

Are you using VPN? If so, did you delete the VPN and reinstall it after updating?

And it IS deniable that it is a bug. A bug doesn’t affect dozens of users, it affects thousands.

I’m having the issue as well. Had it with one provider-Verizon. So switched to AT&T and just updated my phone and having it again. Got Tmobile home internet router less than a month ago. Connecting is fine but no internet connection on phone wifi shows. They have replaced the router and still doing it. Have Century link home internet as well. Does it with that as well. They checked All the lines and updated my router twice. Still happening. Tried resetting the network settings, still happens. I’m really over it. Lots of people are having this issue honestly. Mines been working fine for 2 years and all of a sudden 3/4 months ago it all turns to ****

I have this exact issue (to this day, since installing ios 16.0). I am now on ios 16.1.2, and the issue persists, no matter what I do. It's an apple issue as far as I'm concerned and I hope it gets fixed eventually in a patch. I have never had a VPN installed on any apple device. I have tried every possible configuration on my end, every possible solution, except one I will not do. I will switch back to android before I do it. I will NOT under any circumstances wipe and restore from backup to fix this issue. If that's the solution, I'm a lost customer, for life. I have tried other routers, I have tried all possible settings on the phone. Everything except wiping the device and restoring from backup. I have read other posters say they tried this, and the issue was gone after wiping, but returned upon restoring backup. Apple did something in IOS16 that caused many people to have an issue with WI-FI. I am starting to lean towards planned obsolescence. It is common enough that this is thread has 5 pages. It is common enough that there are multiple threads all over the internet experiencing this issue on a variety of device types (once IOS 16 is installed).

This happened to me almost just like all the others after updating to ios16.2. I tried all basic suggestions…restarting iPhone, restarting router, WiFi on off, airplane mode on off, etc…

The thing that solved my problem was manually disconnecting my TotalAV app and also in my iPhone settings under VPN. Once I manually toggled it back on in the TotalAV app, the problem resolved. The thing that triggered the VPN as the source of my potential issue was that I couldn’t get the VPN to connect in the app until after manually disconnecting in iPhone settings.

Hope this was helpful.

I had the same problem with iOS 16.2 on my child’s iPhone 12 Pro. The no internet connection issue finally resolved immediately after changing “Date & Time to set automatically.

I had the same problem on two different networks. I did not have a VPN. I tried resetting network settings, restarting the phone, turned off Wi-Fi assist. Forgot the network and rejoined. Checked locations services. Checked for ip conflicts on network. NONE of those things worked, just changing the time to set automatically appears to have worked. I hope that helps some.

That's a pretty extreme action. Maybe consider just resetting all network settings? I can live with this. It's been tolerable since I rolled back my firmware in my router, which I think may have contributed. Still, frustrating considering these are "consumer" products. Never had to do things like this with a car or a stereo. Pretty demanding to keep these things working. Do better Apple!

I agree, I have been dealing with this since September. I have tried everything that I can find and that AppleCare has done with me and none of it worked. They have told me that this is a known issue and have escalated it to engineering. I have spent way too much time on this, it should just work. It’s frustrating and disappointing. So I finally tried reset all settings instead of setting back to factory, been there, didn’t work, and not going back. So far, this is the only thing that has made some difference. Frustrating anyone should be in this situation.

These issues are almost all due to router firmware.

This can be seen by the fact that your phone will seamlessly connect to Wi-Fi and most every hotspot available.

I know that doesn't help when it won't connect to the one or ones you need it to most, but it helps show it's far from a universal issue.

If it's a big enough issue in your home, you could try substituting a different Wi-Fi router; that's not really a "solution" but may work as a workaround for you.
