Apple Trade In with Bad Battery

So I had pre-ordered to upgrade my 13P to 14P, but since I have done this in a matter of just 2 weeks, the battery in my 13P is going bad (starting to bulge, and major overheating when plugged in).

Pretty sure by the time Apple sends the 14P and I send my 13P back in to Asurion, that they will come back and offer zero for the phone because of overheating/bulging.

It look as if I need to cancel my upgrade right now, and get battery/phone warranty replaced.

Problem is, I will not get any kind of a decent trade in at that point for a 14P.

It would seem I am screwed either way.

Hi pdxracer,

If you'd like help with changing your iPhone, you might find this information useful.

Are you part of the iPhone Upgrade Program or talking about Apple Trade In? We ask because they are different programs and want to give you the best information. Below you will see information about both programs.

If your battery is expanded, you might be able to get it serviced as part of the AppleCare+, which you already pay monthly for as part of the iPhone Upgrade program. We mention this because you could get the iPhone 13 battery serviced under AppleCare+ and then proceed with your upgrade. Here's how to Check Your Service and Support Coverage to see if you have AppleCare+. This information below is from iPhone Upgrade Program.

Peace of mind. Included with AppleCare+.
When you join the iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare+ is included in your monthly payments.⁴ You also have the option to expand your coverage to AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for an additional cost.⁵ Simply choose the coverage that’s right for you.

This information below is from Apple Trade In. These FAQ’s provide more information if you are using the Apple Trade In program.

How much will I get for my trade-in?

It depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition. Answer a few questions accurately, and once we receive the device within the specified time frame and verify its condition, you’ll most likely receive the full amount of the estimated refund.
Keep in mind that we need to receive your device within 14 days of initiating the trade-in, and the condition needs to match what you told us.
If the condition of the device is different from what you described, we’ll provide a revised value. You can either accept or reject it. If you accept it, we’ll continue with the trade-in and either charge or credit the difference in value to the card you provided. If you reject it, we’ll cancel the trade-in, return your current device, and charge the original trade-in value to your card. No matter what, we’ll send you email updates about the progress of your trade-in, so you’ll know what’s happening at every step.

Can I trade in my current device when I join the iPhone Upgrade Program?

If you are not already participating in the iPhone Upgrade Program, you can trade in your eligible device at an Apple Store for credit toward your subsequent purchase as part of the iPhone Upgrade Program.
If you are currently a member of the iPhone Upgrade Program and wish to remain in the program, please do not proceed with Apple Trade In. After you upgrade and receive your new iPhone, we’ll arrange for you to trade in your old one. If you do continue with Apple Trade In, you will be responsible for both your outstanding iPhone Upgrade Program loan and the purchase price of any new iPhone you purchase through Apple Trade In.

If you have further questions, let the community know which program you are referring to.

We hope that helps with your question and take care!

If you haven’t received your new iPhone yet you can get the battery replaced now and not need to cancel your preorder. Otherwise, yes you will need to cancel if you don’t want to be charged the full price for the new iPhone. Remember you will have 14 (or 15) days to send in your trade in after you receive your trade in kit (usually after you receive your new phone but sometimes the kit will come at the same time).
