after upgrading to safari 16 pinned tabs missing

All my pinned tabs are missing after completing recent OS update. Any ideas would be helpful... I know safari changed the pinned tabs to pinned groups?

Can I recover the Pinned tabs? I'm using an Imac and OS MONTEREY 12.6

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Crocresedzs,

Check under System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud and ensure if Safari is enabled. If it is not, toggle it on.

After that, restart your Mac. Additionally, confirm if your tabs have converted into a tab group.

In the Safari app on your Mac, click the down arrow  next to the Sidebar button in the toolbar. Do you see any existing tab groups with your data there?

Let us know and we'll continue from there.

I had the same problem here, did the recommended trick of enabling Safari in iCloud and restarting and I thought it did nothing. However, after opening a new window in Safari, all of the pinned tabs populated, they just weren't showing in the existing window I had open before/after the change and restart.

Thanks! This has saved me potentially many hours of lost productivity and frustration.

Note that I had previously turned iCloud Safari sync off because it just wasn't working reliably - it kept reverting back to my previous session. Hopefully that is better now also, and hopefully Safari will now remember the position of my toolbar items, which kept resetting after every session also. :)

Similarly for me. But it happened when Safari froze, and I had to force quit, and then all my Pinned Tabs on my iMac disappeared, and I had hoped to get them back. After a short call with Apple Support, there were only 2 options:

1) Time Machine – which I don't use, I use iCloud, but apparently Pinned Tabs are not on iCloud, and if they disappear, then they are lost (eg: there is no .plist to recover, etc).

2) Turning off/on Safari in iCloud – which I doubted would help since Pinned Tabs are not on iCloud, and there were no more options, other then having lost them for good.

No solutions, not good :(

I have this very same problem. Prior to the Safari 16 upgrade, pinned tabs would reappear each time Safari was quit and relaunched. Now, the behavior is not as it was: If you pin tabs, and Quit Safari, those pinned tabs vanish. This is a terrible inconvenience.

  1. None of the previously pinned tabs have converted into a group.
  2. If I create a group and then quit, that group disappears after relaunch.
  3. Any attempt to pin tabs does not persist.
  4. I am properly logged into iCloud, and Safari is enabled.

I have the same issue. Among other worst and worst experiences... and unreasonable GUI changes like system settings.

Since Tim took over, Apple became more like the logistic company (Amazon-like style)... without much care about the user experience on the Jobs/Ive level. And it is getting worse. I am considering Windows again as there are offering a similar Ux... but with more features available... Continuity is the only thing left holding me back.
