How do I stop Siri from talking in response to questions?

Until iOS 16, there was an option to mute Siri when using handsfree. This was so useful: I could ask Siri a question, and the answer would simply be displayed on-screen, without any annoying vocal feedback.

Since iOS 16, Siri ‘intelligently’ decides when to speak in response and when not to. Which, of course, means it speaks almost all the time.

I just want to be able to shut Siri up without having to put my whole phone on mute. How do I do this?

iPhone 8, iOS 16

Hello Gruts,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

You're only wanting to see the response from Siri on your screen instead of having Siri provide voice responses, right?

If we understood that correctly, check out the following steps to adjust this setting. You can locate more details on this here: Change Siri settings on iPhone - Apple Support

Change how Siri responds

Siri can respond out loud or silently (with text onscreen). You can also see your request onscreen.

Go to Settings  > Siri & Search, then do any of the following:

Change when Siri provides voice responses: Tap Siri Responses, then choose an option below Spoken Responses.

Always see the response from Siri onscreen: Tap Siri Responses, then turn on Always Show Siri Captions.

See your request onscreen: Tap Siri Responses, then turn on Always Show Speech.

If that isn't helpful in what you're looking to adjust, provide more details so we have a better understanding.

Take care.

In doing searches on this problem,I came across an answer which seems to (sort of) solve this problem. When Siri is answering lower the volume. It appears that there is a volume level associated with Siri only and the general volume level is not affected. Next time Siri will answer at this volume ,even if it is set to zero whereas the main volume level is not affected.

Millions of people must be experiencing this major problem and Apple seems to be not interested in helping with answers. I don’t understand why it is the customers who have to answer each other’s questions as in this site where only 3 people are participating.

In ios16 the old option (available on iOS 15 ) of muting Siri has been removed. Now the only options are - Automatic (Siri will use on-device intelligence to automatically determine when to speak) and

Prefer spoken responses. On either of them Siri will speak the responses all the time.

I don’t understand why instead of improving the choices they have been limited. I don’t want everyone around to hear the answer to my question but now I have no choice because that option has been removed.
