For help with mail messages ensure the contacts aren't blocked with the steps below found in the article here: Block or unblock senders in Mail on Mac - Apple Support
"Unblock senders
You can also remove senders directly from the list of blocked senders. Choose Mail > Preferences, click Junk Mail, then click Blocked."
