How to check if my new iPhone was already opened?

Hello Community,

I bought a new iPhone online today. The box that I received was not in the best of health. In fact, the seal appeared to be tampered with (the seal was partially opened). When I opened the seal, it came off very easily, almost effortlessly.

I saw some dirt on the back side of the phone which went away when I wiped it. Not sure if it was dust from my own hands since I opened the packaging. Even the paper cover on the front glass wasn't in immaculate condition. Overall, not a happy unboxing experience.

My question is this:

How can I check if this phone was previously bought by someone else and returned? Or the box was previously opened by someone for any reason?

I went to checkcoverage.apple.com and it shows ACTIVE Technical Support until 22 December 2022 and ACTIVE Repairs and Service Coverage until 22 September 2023. The dates look fine to me.

Is there anything else that can be done to check if the iPhone is brand new, i.e. never opened, never turned on earlier, etc.?

Thanks.

This is the iPhone 13 Mini that I bought.

The packaging was only an indicator of how poorly the box was stored/ handled. It looked like the box was dropped in dirty water and then wiped dry. The seals too were in bad shape. I can literally put the phone back and seal the box again.

What is more concerning was the white paper cover on the display which looked like it was opened and put back. Also, check out how the Apple sticker inside the box looks like:

As you can see, it looks like the sticker dropped in water and was dried later.

I’m not worried about the sticker obviously. But its condition indicates that the contents of the box were subject to water/ dampness at some point. Which means the phone may have seen some exposure to liquid. This is what is worrying.

If you are concerned take it to an Apple Store if you have one you can get to or an authorized repair facility to look at the phone and assure you it is ok. Otherwise you will have to return it (you purchased from Amazon and not Apple directly?) and wait unit the one you want is back in stock. Nothing else anyone can tell you. Again though….what you are stating and the picture of the sticker doesn’t indicate anything to be concerned about. Packaging won’t always be pristine and that’s fine. The sticker doesn’t look like it’s been wet (I don’t see discoloration indicating that and it being wavy doesn’t mean it was wet. My sticker was in the little envelope is a way that it had a little wave because it wasn’t flat and was partially caught in the envelope edges if that makes sense). I am almost positive your phone is fine, was not opened, and was not exposed to water. But to set your own mind at ease take it to be inspected or return it. You don’t have long to return so you need to make up your mind now.

There were multiple indications of tampering/ poor handling/ storage, so I’m sceptical. The phone itself is running very fine. I’m hoping there won’t be any problems in future. If Amazon doesn’t find a replacement by next week, I’ll take a final call on whether to keep the phone or return it.

Thank you for your reassuring words. They help when someone is confused/ concerned.
