iOS 16 breaks cinematic mode in Final Cut Pro (and iMovie)

Looks to me like he already did.

Bottom line:

• If you have Cinema clips recorded with iOS 15 then you can edit them just fine with both Monterey and Ventura (Golden Master) and 10.6 and above
• If you have Cinema clips recorded with iOS 16 then you can only edit them under Ventura (Golden Master) and either 10.6,.4 or 10.6.5

Nothing more nothing less.

Does Cinematic Mode work with other media, perhaps one recorded with iPhone 13 on iOS 15?

How are you getting the files from your iPhone to your Mac? AirDrop? Did you click on Options and chose "All Photos Data"?

I take it that videos taken with iOS 15 still work, then?

It seems that this may be a bug, which would require an update to iOS, FCP, macOS... or all of them.

I can't test, since my iPhone is still the venerand 7...

I expect that others with an iPhone 13 or 14 may chime in with their experience.

I’m having the same problem! Cinematic clips shot on iOS 16 don't work in Final Cut Pro 10.6.4. I read somewhere that installing macOS Ventura might fix it, but I haven't tried yet (and who knows if it introduces other issues). Are you able to see if Cinematic is fixed in macOS Ventura?

It is 100% sure that any pics or videos taken with IOS16 that has Portrait or Cinematic mode , the editing is broken on a Mac, or other IOS devices not running IOS16.

Me too in iMovie. My workaround - which *****, but might get you over the line, is to do the cinematic edits on the phone and then airdrop to my Mac. The depth of field effect is retained but can’t be modified.

It’s possible to edit the focus points on the phone, and it will show the result in FCPX if you import the movie with the “E” in its title. I know it’s not ideal, and I’m sure your deadline is missed, but for now, it’s the only “workaround”. Not convenient if you’re timing the focus “rack” to other action or music. Hopefully it’s fixed sooner than later. It will have to be fixed in fcpx and iMovie.

Third party plugins. Playback components for some Canon camera formats. Incompatibility with 10.5.4 but not 10.4.10. Many application crashes in the background. Too early to say of these are fixed in the release version.

Can't confirm a single one of those (beyond maybe some plugins not being incompatible period, which in those cases has nothing to do with FC or Ventura). 🤷🏼‍♂️

And compatibility with 10.5.4 and 10.4.10? Really? 😄

If I airdrop a clip from 14 pro to iMac it preserves the cinematic settings as applied on phone, but if imported from photos within FCPX 12.6.5 the effect is not preserved.

For both clips, the "Show Cinematic Editor" is grayed out in FCPX.

My iMac cannot be upgraded to Ventura, so if that's the only fix here, then that's a pain in the butt

Well, if you're on Monterey and have updated to iOS 16 then you'll have to downgrade to iOS 15 if you want to keep shooting (and editing) CM clips. Or rather only the CM clips you shot under iOS 15 are going to work. That's the other "fix".

And are you activating the "All Photos Data" option when you transfer them via Airdrop?? Because otherwise they're getting flattened, yes. But the import (of iOS 15 shot CM clips) from the Photos sidebar should work just fine. It does here.

I'm using FCPX 10.6.5 on MacOS Ventura 13.0 (22A380) and iOS 16.1 (20B82) on an iPhone 14 Pro.

Cinematic Mode clips still can't be edited in cinematic editor so, nothing really is fixed yet. The only workaround for me is to edit the clips in Photos App on MacOS and THEN import them to FCPX.

Unless you were previously using beta versions, there's no logical reason why it should be that way. Whereby you don't even mention which versions of what—aside from iOS—we're even talking about, so… yeah…
