Okay. Thank you for responding, even though I was a dill-weed. I'm just gonna wait it out and see if it fixes itself when the public release comes out. If it doesn't, I'll have to borrow my old MacBook back and restore. You mentioned that the older OS rollback won't be compatible with iPad OS 16 cloud backups. I never wanna have to rebuild my Procreate brush library ever again. Thank you for the heads up.

Concerning participation within beta programmes, to quote directly from Apple:

“We do not recommend installing pre-release software on personal-critical and/or business-critical systems. Backups should be maintained to mitigate data loss in the event of an application or system crash. Apple is not liable for malfunctions resulting from the installation of this software. Furthermore, Apple makes no guarantee that data created or modified by this software will be compatible with future versions.”

If you are running a beta version of iPadOS - as detailed in the associated release notes - you should have full expectation of encountering issues and bugs. You may need to perform a factory restore - which will reinstall the most recent production version of iPadOS - at time of writing, this being iPadOS 15.7.

Thank you for the link, but this doesn't really answer the question that OP and I are wondering about. I deleted my public beta profile today and am getting the same message. I did a search online and didn't find anything that really answered the question. Is this error message to be expected, or is it indicative of a larger issue? Is it resulting from the conflict of the beta iPad OS 16 running on the iPad, profile deleted, and so the system is running into a roadblock when checking the regular OS updates that are older? Will it resolve when a newer version of 16 comes out to the general public?

Okay - I’ll be blunt…

You needn’t be rude. You’ve hijacked somebody else’s post. The answers provided may be useful to the OP, if not to you.

If you experiment with beta versions of software, expect to encounter issues, bugs and other problems. In using beta software, your iPad might not behave as expected - and your may have to fully restore your iPad on order to recover normal function.

Any data that you have modified or saved when using a beta may not be compatible with any other version of iOS/iPadOS.

Apple make clear the risks associated with using beta software. If you can’t accept the risk - or the consequences of using this software - then don’t dabble with beta versions.

That's fair. It was rude and I'm sorry about that. It's not my style at all usually. I've been trying to get an answer from several sources, nothing actually answering the question directly. Just kind of roundabout answers. Or, on Reddit, they don't even publish. Not an excuse. Again, I'm sorry. And thank you for trying to help.

I do understand the risks. What I'm wondering is this:

Are you saying that this is legitimately a "you definitely need to restore the iPad for updates to work again" case?

Or is it a kind of a thing where there is a conflict between the newer beta version installed on the iPad and the older public OS on Apple's server, and will sort itself out when the 16.1.x is available since there will be no conflict then?

It sounds like OP ran into the same thing I did. If it sorts itself out once the public OS catches up to the beta each of us has installed, then there's no need for a restore.

Does that make sense? It's difficult to explain.

It is impossible to predict whether or not a future beta release will resolve the issue that you have encountered. You may have encountered or triggered a unique issue that can only be resolved by restoring your iPad to a known-good production version of iPadOS.

Beta software, by its very nature, may be unstable or unpredictable. Unless your data is safely backed-up elsewhere - you should never install beta software on your sole or principal device. For testing beta versions of software, you should use a spare device.

As a parting though, consider that while unusual, beta software can permanently render a device unusable or unrecoverable.
