Why did my iPhone 14 screen go black?

My new iPhone 14pro max has a black screen this morning following its regular overnight charge. I have tried the reset and it is now plugged in via a cord hoping this will work. Anyone else had this issue?

FYI, 16.0.2 did NOT fix the problem on my 14 Pro as hoped. I put it back on my wireless charger last night for the first time since my overnight BSOD a week ago. When I woke up this morning, it was clear the phone had rebooted (passcode required; different home screen widgets showing). I opened the battery app and found it had been unresponsive for 3 hours overnight, then re-booted itself. My first BSOD occurrence while charging overnight was similar but never rebooted. This is really annoying...

Black Screen of Death

BTW, there's a 300+ post on Reddit discussing the issue. It seems to be highly correlated with charging, especially overnight charging, both wired and wireless. There are a couple of cases where this happened while not charging, but those seem rare. I'm surprised it hasn't appeared in the press yet. The Click Vol Up, Click Vol Down, Hold Sleep button until logo appears (up to a minute or two!) fix seems to revive the phone in all cases I've seen...

I unplugged my iPhone 14 pro this morning After charging all night and had the black screen of death. Watched a you tube video on quick fix and that solved my problem. Clicked the on button then the off button quickly ( one at a time) then held down the power button on right side of phone for about 40 seconds and my phone turned back on. Hope this helps.

I encountered this same issue. My iPhone 14 Max Pro on iOS 16.2 died while it was charging overnight. I had a mini meltdown early in the morning... Apple should reimburse me for mental distress *lol*

Found the workaround fix in this thread - press the up volume button once then the down volume once and hold the power button on the right side until you see the Apple logo. This resets the iPhone.

i’ve posted a method to get past the black screen event, several times on this forum thread. I had this happen four or five times, in the months after I bought my 14pro. The method, using Siri, fixes the problem, instantly, every time. I upgraded to the latest firmware and switched to using the Mag Safe charger, the problem hasn’t happened in quite some time. When this was happening, to my phone, I was using a wireless charger - a platform thing that you lay the phone on, to charge, but not Mag Safe - the Apple brand magnetic disc charger. Don’t know if it was the firmware update or the Mag Safe charger that fixed the problem. What charging method do you use? If it happens again, ask SIRI, to turn up the brightness, for you, and see what happens.

Black screen of death on iPhone 14 Pro happened to me last night too. Wireless charging. Looking at the battery graph, it died at 1am, when the battery level was 100%.

The ’volume up/down/hold power’ fixed it, when nothing else would.

I’ve used iPhones since iPhone 3GS, and this is the first time the phone has become unreliable as an alarm clock. :(

The black screen happened with my 14 Pro less than a month after purchase directly from the Apple store in LA. The only solution that worked was the answer on here to press the up volume button once, down volume once, then hold the power button.

I had to hold the power button for close to 15 seconds before the apple logo finally appeared on my phone.

The phone was not on a charger when this happened, it was just randomly midday while I was working.

There is no bug for Apple to fix. And asking for Apple to do anything in this user-to-user forum where Apple’s participation is minimal is a waste of time.

Here is how to force-restart your phone:

 then

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME DOWN

     then

  • Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears (15-30 seconds), ignoring "slide to power off" if it appears

The operative word here is QUICKLY; and try it a couple of times, the timing is a little tricky.

You have to trust me with this one, all you do is that you try pressing the volume up button once then the volume down button once then keep pressing the power button for 30 seconds or longer and if that doesn’t work then plug your phone to the charger and leave it for 10 minutes or even 15 minutes and it’ll turn on by itself

Just like I posted 8 days ago!

On your iPhone 14, press and hold the button on the right side of the phone - It will engage Siri.

Ask Siri to turn up the brightness - literally say, “Turn up the Brightness.” Even though the screen is black, a slider will appear on the screen.

Slide the slider, to the right, to turn up the brightness on the screen.

It won’t stop the issue from happening again, but it works. You won’t have to reboot your phone.

There is an easy fix for this. It won’t stop it happening again, but you won’t have to reboot your phone.

On your iPhone 14, press and hold the button on the right side of the phone - It will engage Siri. You won’t see the Siri animation on the screen - the screen will still be black.

While holding the button down, ask Siri to turn up the brightness -

Actually say:

“Turn up the Brightness.”

Even though the screen is black, a slider will appear on the screen.

Slide the slider, to the right, to turn up the brightness on the screen.

It won’t stop the issue from happening again, but it works. You won’t have to reboot your phone.

I bought iPhone 14 Pro on 22 Feb 2023, bought in the UK before moving to NZ and using a NZ SIM card.

On the morning of Mon 6 March, after being on charge all night, the screen was black and phone was non-responsive. Tried holding side-button, nothing happened. Tried using vol-up, vol-down, side-button, nothing happened. Reported to Apple and booked into a local Apple service centre for Thu 9 March.

On Wed 8 Mar phone came on, I managed to switch off ‘Find My’ (as asked by the service centre). Within a couple of hours the screen was black and phone non-responsive again. Took into service centre on Thu as planned. On Tue 14 Mar the service centre got round to looking at the phone.

They removed the SIM card, plugged it in for half an hour, and it came on as expected. They reported back to me that I shouldn’t let the battery run down. I politely told them that there’s definitely something wrong with it. They told me they’d run all their diagnostic/MRI testing and all the hardware was passing 100%. I did explain to them that I’m a software developer and have written bespoke business apps for iOS in the hopes that when I tell them that I didn’t just let the battery run down, that they might believe me.

I took the phone home and it was fine for a few days. Then it happened again and again. After a great deal of trial and error the following seems to work, to fix BSOD

  • Plug in to power source for a few (maybe 5 mins)
  • Eject SIM card tray and remove SIM
  • Re-insert empty SIM card tray
  • Vol-up, vol-down, side button

Phone comes back on after 20 seconds (sometime it takes a couple of attempts at this)

Once back on the phone will report no SIM card, so shut it down, put SIM back in and start up

This seemed to work reliably, I used it about 5 times over the weeks. (This also explains why the Apple service centre got it working straight away).

Yesterday, BSOD again, I used the above procedure and it worked, then 5 minutes later the phone went black and is now a brick, the above procedure doesn’t work any more. Nothing works: plugged in, all combinations of buttons, letting the battery run down and then recharging. I’ve tried Passvers and going into Recovery and DFU modes. Nothing.

In early April I upgraded to iOS 16.4.1 - none of the upgrades made any difference. I switched off Raise to Wake, that didn’t change anything either.

I have the original receipt and am heading back to the UK this week anyway so I’ll go back to the shop I bought it from and see if they can give me a new handset, worth a shot. The only thing I can think of now is to keep trying to get it switch on then, if I can get this thing back on, immediately reset to factory settings and set up everything from scratch (probably restore data from a backup).

All-in-all it’s been very difficult remaining polite throughout this, the amount of money spent on a brand new product is scary, and for that to simply not work with no path to resolution is so frustrating.

I’ve now bought a second-hand XR and am setting that up from a backup. Very, very ****** off.
