Why did my iPhone 14 screen go black?

My new iPhone 14pro max has a black screen this morning following its regular overnight charge. I have tried the reset and it is now plugged in via a cord hoping this will work. Anyone else had this issue?

I saw a tutorial ; press the up volume button once then the down volume once and hold the power button on the right side until you see the Apple logo. This resets the iPhone. It’s a firmware bug. I hope Apple fixes this soon. I had a mini melt down

I owned my iPhone 14 Pro for around 2 weeks when the screen started randomly blacking out while I was in the middle of using it. Initially it did it mostly when I was reading something in landscape mode, then it was truly random. Usually, all it took to get my screen responsive again was pressing the sleep button twice slowly. As such, I didn't think this was the BSOD problem, though I couldn't find any other search results online that mentioned the screen going black temporarily.

Yesterday, for the first time, the screen went black and was unresponsive (it wouldn't come back after pressing the sleep button 2 times slowly). I tried the trick many people mentioned for a forced restart (up volume, down volume, hold the sleep button) and it didn't work (I held the sleep button pressed for a while and nothing happened). After about 15 minutes, the screen became responsive again. I immediately did a backup.

Today, I went to Best Buy to get the phone exchanged (I was still within the exchange period). The phone started acting up again while I was there. Thankfully it was on long enough for me to turn off Find My iPhone and for the salesperson to get my IMEI ID off the phone before it became unresponsive for good! They had a Geek Squad person try to do a force restart but he wasn't successful. We kept at it during the whole exchange process (I was there for more than an hour) but it never came back on. FWIW, I had the latest iOS installed (16.1.2 at the time) and there was plenty of storage space available.

Hopefully the glitch was with the first phone and the 2nd won't have this issue. I was lucky in many ways with this one since I was still within the exchange period and my local Best Buy still had a few iPhone 14 Pro's in stock (my local Verizon store has been out of stock for a while).

My phone was not charging when I got the black screen. It had about 70% charge. I could tell the phone was still alive because I plugged it in and it made the blipping sound that it does when you plug it in. I hit a few buttons randomly, not having read the thread about which buttons to hit, then just left it for about 45 minutes. The screen just suddenly came alive.

I’m having the same problem. The reset doesn’t work. A normal shut down does the same thing. I close all apps so it won’t over heat and that doesn’t work. Is this black screen harmful to the phone, is it the phone or is it the upgrades. Apple needs to get a solution to this problem and quick. Can I exchange my phone?

My iPhone 11 Pro Max started doing this around Thanksgiving so I took it into the AT&T store where I purchased they did not know what was going on. They talked me into buying a brand new phone which took a month to receive. I just received my phone Saturday and have it set up, and now it is doing the same thing it is not on my lock screen. It is my home screen that continues to go black and I have to constantly re-said it. If this is an issue that can be repaired I would’ve never spent the money on a brand new phone And would have kept my old one but now I’ve had this phone less than two days and it is doing the same thing for the amount of money. The Apple products cost. There should be no reason that an absolutely brand new phone it was just set up yesterday on January 2nd Should be doing this 🤬

There is an easy fix for this. It won’t stop it happening again, but you won’t have to reboot your phone. Tell Siri to brighten your screen.

On your iPhone 14, press and hold the button on the right side of the phone - It will engage Siri.

You won’t see the Siri animation on the screen - the screen will still be black.

While holding the button down, ask Siri to turn up the brightness - Actually say:

“Turn up the Brightness.”

Even though the screen is black, a slider will appear on the screen.

Slide the slider, to the right, to turn up the brightness on the screen.

It won’t stop the issue from happening again, but it works. You won’t have to reboot your phone.

this hasn’t happened to my iphone14Pro, lately. I switched from an after-market platform wireless charger back to the Apple MagSafe magnetic disc charger.

This is a problem with all iPhone 14s. See if you can take phone back and get refund on new phone. Some places give you a few days if you want to return. I have only had the black screen of death happen once on my iPhone 14. Hoping it does not happen again. iPhone needs to either fix this problem or give us new iPhones when iPhone 15 comes out to replace our messed up iPhones.

I encountered this same issue. My iPhone 14 Max Pro on iOS 16.2 died while it was charging overnight. I had a mini meltdown early in the morning... Apple should reimburse me for mental distress *lol*

Found the workaround fix in this thread - press the up volume button once then the down volume once and hold the power button on the right side until you see the Apple logo. This resets the iPhone.

I'm so disappointed. My new (less than a month old) iPhone 14 Pro Max started going dark on its own today. After reading comments, I've been able to correct issue by turning off and restarting but have had to do this multiple times. It goes right back to dark after awhile. What do I need to do? Do I need a new phone? I've paid too much money to have to deal with this kind of issue. Now I'm worried about what else might go wrong with it.

Why did my iPhone 14 screen go black?
