Serious system slowdown due to fileproviderd

I recently upgraded to MacOS 12.6 Monterey. I noticed serious system slow-down issues, manifested as taking seconds to switch between applications. I'd click a window from another application and the system would hang for 2-3 seconds, versus instantly focusing on the new window as in my old system before the upgrade. I have an Intel-based MacBook Pro (about 1-2 years old).

I noticed the fileproviderd process was using lots of CPU (Activity Monitor). After doing some Googling, I decided to Force Quit the process. The problem cleared up immediately.

It now recurs intermittently and I do the same thing: Force Quit fileproviderd. Can someone explain what this process is for and why it needs to use so much CPU? When will Apple issue an OS update to fix the problem? Macs are supposed to be "for the rest of us." It's ridiculous that I have to get into Activity Monitor to prevent my Mac from becoming useless.

Thanks for your help.

Then suggest running the application Etrecheck as previously suggest by @ a brody

The application is free or paid from added features.

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

iCloud works fine if you have the "free" 5 GB account. Many choose to increase their size without realizing the upstream bandwidth requirements of maintaining a large inventory of files on iCloud.

Unless you have a Fiberoptic, or direct T-3 or better connection at a school, iCloud tends to work best on small accounts.

Consider this, the upstream of most cable providers is limited to 7 Mbps, which is less than a megabyte per second.

When transferring 5120 megabytes (5 GB) it will take more than an hour at that rate, and that's with a direct internet connection. Other users sharing a WiFi can often slow it down more.

MacKeeper by Zeobit, and Advanced Mac Cleaner have both been added to the App Store, and actually behave in ways of malware, in that are seriously system intensive to the point of destroying the ability of applications to launch, deleting cache files as they are being written, and eating up system processing bandwidth for tasks that do nothing but offer a placebo of solutions. Etrecheck looks for memory resident programs that you might not otherwise see, and reports their presence, and reports any potential adware that might have snuck in. Just because it is pre-authorized by Apple does not mean it meets the holy grail of being safe for your system. Apple's review process does not allow people who don't purchase software from its store to leave reviews, so negative reviews that come as a result of techs resolving issues from people who come to them, never get a chance to get broadcast on the store, unless a prior purchaser chooses to add the review.

I'm not questioning Apple's policy, just stating a weakness of the "pre-authorized" policy. I have been on this forum since 2000, and have seen many such software come and go. Etrecheck is written by one of our forum's frequent contributors.

Thanks for your suggestions. The system was not running anywhere near high capacity. Idle was at least 80%, probably closer to 90%. That's idle CPU, not capacity. So, it was running at 10%-20% capacity, at most.

I am not running system optimizers.

Sorry, I will not be downloading any tools.

Still running well as of now. fileproviderd is consuming about ~5% of CPU, vs 80%-100% when I was having the issues.

Interesting - some users will download AV Software, Disk Cleaner, Disk Optimizers that are all known to cause many issue and are not needed but to download an Known Application to Trouble Shoot a Computer Problems is off limits

User choice and so be it

Should the user decided to run the suggested Application at a later date - we will be happy to have a look that it

Uer Choice

It is most interesting how some ( not All users) are prepared to download AV Software, Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizers and other " Bad Actor " softwares that are know on these Forums to cause " Havoc " on the computer but to allow a Known Tool that is sometimes used by Apple Support themselves is a No Go.

Best of luck with this computer issue

Have taken enough of your time

Should the User ( you ) decide to run the suggested application at a later date - please do and we will have a look at the Report.
