I updated to iOS 16 but the option to see and recover recently deleted messages only worked for messages deleted AFTER the update. I want to recover one I accidentally deleted right before it. Help?

If you use messages in iCloud, you cannot recover.
If you do not use messages in iCloud, and you have a device backup that contains the message, you can factory reset and erase your device. Then, restore it using your backup.
